SEATTLE — A 31-year-old ‘dark web’ heroin dealer was sentenced today in U.S. District Court here to five years in prison, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman. Zachary Madding of Mill Creek, was arrested at a long-stay hotel in Mukilteo, after a horrific assault on his estranged girlfriend. At the sentencing hearing U.S. District Judge James L. Robart said:
“The person who is before me is not a good person. He is a common criminal who is engaged in the most serious behavior…. On the dark web you have no idea who you are dealing with… Because of your actions, there are 1,600 families out there who are going through the pain of addiction.”
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with assistance from the Mukilteo Police Department.
“This defendant put thousands of people at risk of death by anonymously sending his potent heroin to all corners of the country,” said Gorman.
“He knew all too well the destruction his drugs inflicted, having critically injured two young pedestrians while driving under the influence of narcotics. Dealing on the dark web spreads the destruction from heroin abuse to a far larger geographic area with callous disregard for how communities and addicts are damaged.”
