Nearly 2 million people across Japan’s south-west have been told to evacuate their homes, while more than five million were urged to seek shelter, as powerful Typhoon Haishen skirted the country on its way to the Korean peninsula, leaving four people missing after the building they were in was ruptured in a landslide, and 35 people were injured in the region of 400,000 homes that remain without power.
South Korea is bracing for more pounding after being hit by another typhoon last week, with Japan’s Coast Guard resuming a limited search for 40 missing sailors who were on board a ship feared to have sunk off the country’s south-west, but so far, authorities have found no sign of the crew, except two Filipino sailors who have been rescued, and the recovery the body of one unidentified crew member.
In Miyazaki, on the eastern side of Kyushu Island, four people are missing after the building they were in was swept away in a landslide.

Eight people have been killed in the raging wild fires that destroyed more than 3,300 structures, burned over 600,000 hectares across California, and forced the airlift to safety of more than 200 people after a fast-moving wildfire cut off the only road out of the Mammoth Pool Reservoir, a popular recreational site in Sierra National Forest in the state of California.
As of Sunday morning local time, nearly 15,000 firefighters were battling 23 fires across the state according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, and the National Weather Service warned “sweltering” heat would continue, with gusty winds and low humidity creating ideal conditions for further wildfires.
“Since the lightning siege that started on Saturday, August 15, 2020, there have been nearly 14,000 lightning strikes,” the state’s fire authority Cal Fire said.
Authorities urged residents to turn off appliances and lights to help avoid blackouts from an overwhelmed power grid.

President Trump announced that soon American companies that outsource their operations to China will be unable to compete for US federal contracts under a new upcoming ban, suggesting that it is possible to decouple the American economy from China without incurring “monetary losses”:
