Xuehua (Edward) Peng aka Edward Peng was sentenced yesterday to 48 months in prison, and ordered to pay a 30,000 fine for acting as an agent of the People’s Republic of China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) in connection with a scheme to conduct pickups known as “dead drops” and transport Secure Digital (S) cards from a source in the United States to the MSS operatives in China, announced the Department of Justice.
Peng, a 56 year-old U.S. citizen living in Hayward, Calif., acted at the direction and under the control of MSS officials in China in retrieving classified information passed to him and leaving money behind for the source. Peng admitted that in March 2015, an official from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) introduced himself to Peng while Peng was on a business trip to China. The official asked Peng to use his citizenship in the United States to assist the official with matters of interest to the PRC. Peng eventually came to understand that the official was employed as an intelligence or security services officer of the PRC, specifically of the Ministry of State Security (MSS), and nevertheless agreed to perform activities in the United States on behalf of the PRC. Peng’s plea acknowledged that he knew he was acting on behalf of the government of the PRC.

The White House is preparing an 50bn economic relief package, with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin saying the government wants to send cash to Americans in an effort to avert economic crisis caused by the corona-virus:
” We’re looking at sending checks to Americans immediately”, he said, the checks being part of a potential 50bn aid package, which the White House is discussing with Congress, following widespread school and shop closures as the number of corona-virus cases in the US passes 5,200 people.
The White House has been debating how to provide relief as activity grinds to a halt in response to curfews and other measures intended to slow the spread of the virus, and speaking at a press conference in Washington, Mr. Mnuchin said the plans for the economic relief, which must be approved by Congress, would also include a bailout for airlines and hotels, also allowing companies and individuals to delay their tax payments for 90 days.
“We look forward to having bipartisan support to pass this legislation very quickly”, Mr.Mnuchin concluded.

New vaccines for the corona-virus disease (COVID-19) are about to enter clinical trials as soon as possible in China, and US, with Chinese scientists have been feverishly working to develop cure by five approaches, namely inactivated vaccines, genetic engineering sub-unit vaccines, adenovirus vector vaccines, nucleic acid vaccines, and vaccines using attenuated influenza virus as vectors, said academician Wang Junzhi.
“So far, most teams are expected to complete pre-clinical research in April and some are moving forward faster”, said Wang.
Some research team has been enrolling volunteers and applied for clinical trials with the National Medical Products Administration, he added.
Meanwhile, Australian scientists have managed to map the immune system fighting the virus, with their research, published in Nature Medicine journal on Tuesday, shows people are recovering from the new virus like they would from the flu, showing that the immune cells patterns of defense would help with vaccine development.
“This discovery is important because it is the first time where we are really understanding how our immune system fights novel coronavirus”, said study co-author Prof Katherine Kedzierska, as authorities have confirmed more than 160,000 cases of the corona-virus, and about 6,500 deaths.
