 A Cuban national, identified as Vale Valdivia, 45 was sentenced to 57 months in prison for his participation in a for-profit alien smuggling conspiracy that transported Cuban nationals to Mexico and then into the United States, following an investigations by HSI Miami office and the Federal Bureau of Investigations. U.S. District Kathleen M. Williams prosecuted the case against Tomas Vale Valdivia, 45.
According to the court record, a group of individuals including Vale Valdivia and additional unnamed associates were members of an alien smuggling conspiracy operating in Miami, Florida, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti, as the leader admitted to organizing the alien smuggling conspiracy, which included five or more participants, and more than 100 migrants were smuggled from Cuba to Mexico and then ultimately to the United States. Generally, the migrants were charged approximately 10,000. Vale Valdivia admitted to knowing that the conspiracy’s activities were unlawful and further admitted their methods, at times, intentionally or recklessly creating a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury to another person using vessels that were overloaded or used during foul weather so as to risk capsizing. In addition to smuggling migrants, Vale Valdivia smuggled baseball players from Cuba to the United States. Vale Valdivia also admitted to being involved in a conspiracy that stole engines in the United States and then shipped the engines through a freight forwarding company in Miami to Mexico to be used to further the alien smuggling conspiracy.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney R. Andrew Murray of the Western District of North Carolina announced that four North Carolina members of the United Blood Nation (UBN or Bloods) street gang were sentenced in Charlotte, North Carolina, on federal Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) conspiracy charges.
Tyquan Ramont Powell, aka Savage, 24, of Charlotte, North Carolina, Lamonte Kentrell Lloyd, aka Murda Mo and Moo, 26, of Scotland Neck, North Carolina, Thomas Oliver, aka T.O., Recon, Rex, and Mr. Trippbadd, 34 of Gastonia, North Carolina were each sentenced by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Frank D. Whitney to serve 35 years in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release. Each of these defendants pleaded guilty to RICO conspiracy charges involving murder. Judge Whitney also sentenced Marquel Michael Cunningham, aka Mayhem, 23, of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, to 15 years in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release following his guilty plea to RICO conspiracy and his role in an attempted murder.

The National Health Commission received information about 9,692 confirmed cases of pneumonia caused by a new type of coronavirus from 31 provinces [regions and municipalities]. 1,527 people are in critical condition, 213 have died, 171 people have been discharged from hospitals, China’s National Health Commission (NHC) commission said in a statement.
The World Health Organization has declared a public health emergency of international concern over the outbreak.
