On April 30, in the night of May 1, the Harz region of Germany sees all sorts of ancient activities come out of the woodwork. Thousands of women dressed in witches’ costumes, gather together and dance around bonfires during the famous “Walpurgis Night,” as witches have supposedly been gathering in Germany’s Harz since the mid-17th century to light fires and “hold revels with the devil.” 

The event still attracts huge crowds of visitors and is spread across 20 locations around the Brocken Mountain. The focal point is Hexentanzplatz (Witches’ Dance-floor) in the Harz Mountains.


The festivities are based on ancient folklore according to which witches were believed to fly on their brooms to the Brocken Mountain on the eve of May Day. Together with devils, they would celebrate the arrival of Spring in there.

 A Gloucester, Massachusetts woman named Melissa Sclafani, 30, was sentenced to prison April 26 in federal court in Boston for her role in a conspiracy to traffic counterfeit steroids and launder money following charges to one count of conspiracy with intent to distribute, to distribute counterfeit steroids and one count of conspiracy to launder money.

A counterfeit steroid organization run by Sclafani and others operating since at least early 2016 smuggled raw steroid from China/Hong Kong into the United States and manufactured injectable anabolic steroids which were advertised and sold over social media sites, fitness blogs, and email as “Onyx Pharmaceuticals”. The steroids were marketed and sold with counterfeit labeling, holograms, and branding and distributed all over the United States.

Archaeologist Julie Gibson is one of only 200 individuals who live on the small island of Rousey, part of a stunning archipelago of islands in the far north of Scotland. 

She commutes to and from the Orkney mainland every day on a small ferry, driving a different car at each end of her trip to get to work. 

The last boat back is at 6 pm, and if she misses it, she has no way to get home.

The twin nuclear reactors ship, jokingly dubbed by Greenpeace a “floating Chernobyl on ice”, yet appropriately named “Academician Lomonosov” after the founder of Moscow State University, has left its home port of St. Petersburg for a long, slow journey to Siberia by traversing the Baltic Sea and passing the northern tip of Norway before stopping in Murmansk in northwest Russia, where the nuclear reactors are to be loaded with fuel.


Environmentalists have slammed the mobile maritime reactors, warning that an accident could damage parts of the Arctic, but Russia’s government, being very eager to mine Siberia’s rich deposits of oil and gas that are thought to extend out to sea toward the North Pole has ignored the protests and hence sending the barge to the Russian Far East and the Arctic coast off Chukotka.

 

Global warming has resulted in a rapid melting of Arctic ice, which is opening up new shipping routes through Russia’s north

Over the weekend Syrian media reported that “Enemy missiles” hit several military outposts in northern Syria, including bases in Hama and Aleppo provinces late on Sunday evening.


Missile strikes on military sites in northern Syria overnight reportedly killed a number of pro-government fighters, including Iranians, but a UK-based monitoring group said four Syrians and 22 foreigners, mostly Iranians, died.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will issue a statement on Monday evening on a “significant development” regarding the nuclear deal between Western powers and Iran.

Iranian officials vowed to respond to that attack, and on Monday Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned the US that the “the time of hitting and running is gone”. “Now, if you hit, you will be hit back,” he said.

At least 29 people, including 10 journalists and cameramen, were killed and 39 others injured in two suspected suicide blasts during the morning rush hour in the capital Kabul, with the first blast carried out by a suicide bomber riding a motorcycle who targeted government employees in the Shash Darak area inside the highly secure green zone of the city at around 8 a.m. (0330 GMT).

“The second attack was carried out by a suicide bomber among journalists and security forces who had gathered near the site of the first blast,” Stanikzai said.

In an online post on its Amaq propaganda site, the terror group IS claimed it had killed over 50 intelligence officials.

Numerous reporters fell victims to the vicious and cowardly attack, including Abdullah Hananzay, AFP also confirmed the killing of Shah Marai, its chief cameraman in Kabul. Other media victims include Mahram Durrani from Salam Watandar, Tolo News cameraman Yar Mohammad Tokhi, Mashal TV reporter Salim Talash, Mashal TV cameraman Ali Salimi, 1TV reporter Ghazi Rasouli, and 1TV cameraman Nowruz Ali. Radio Free Europe journalist Sabawoon Kakar later also succumbed to his wounds.

President Trump has suggested his planned meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un aka “Comrade Un” could take place at the Peace House on the border between North and South Korea, the same site as Mr. Kim’s historic meeting last week with South Korea’s President.

“Numerous countries are being considered for the MEETING, but would Peace House/Freedom House, on the Border of North & South Korea, be a more Representative, Important and Lasting site than a third party country? Just asking!” Mr. Trump tweeted.

Mr. Trump is expected to meet with Mr. Kim in weeks and said in an interview on Thursday that he was considering five locations for his summit with the North Korean leader, although he has said multiple times the talks may not happen.

The Peace House is in the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, on the border between the two countries.

A war between the North and the South ended in July 1953 in a truce rather than an official peace treaty, meaning the two countries are still technically at war.
