The student groups aleges that the University of Iowa violated its First Amendment rights when it de-registered the group for requiring its student group leadership to sign a statement of faith. The government argues in its Statement of Interest that the University violated BLinC’s First Amendment rights to free association and free speech.

Due to the disagreement with BLinC’s statement of faith, the University de-registered BLinC, stripping it of the right to participate in the student activity fair, use the university website, or use university space for meetings and events on an equal basis with other student groups. BLinC filed a lawsuit in December 2017.

The Justice Department announced today the seizure of 15 internet domains associated with DDoS-for-hire services, as well as criminal charges against three defendants who facilitated the computer attack platforms.

The sites, which offered what are often called “booter” or “stress” services, allowed paying users to launch powerful distributed denial-of-service, or DDoS, attacks that flood targeted computers with information and prevent them from being able to access the internet.

Booter services such as those named in this action allegedly cause attacks on a wide array of victims in the United States and abroad, including financial institutions, universities, internet service providers, government systems, and various gaming platforms.

“DDoS for hire services such as these pose a significant national threat,” said U.S. Attorney Schroder.

“Coordinated investigations and prosecutions such as these demonstrate the importance of cross-District collaboration and coordination with public sector partners.”

“The attack-for-hire websites targeted in this investigation offered customers the ability to disrupt computer networks on a massive scale, undermining the internet infrastructure on which we all rely,” said U.S. Attorney Hanna.

“While this week’s crackdown will have a significant impact on this burgeoning criminal industry, there are other sites offering these services – and we will continue our efforts to rid the internet of these websites. We are committed to seeing the internet remain a forum for the free and unfettered exchange of information.”

On Monday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers removed a Pakistani citizen following an investigation by ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), with assistance from the FBI, into an alien smuggling scheme.

HSI New York identified Sharafat Ali Khan, 33, as the Brazilian-based facilitator of the alien smuggling organization.

In March of 2014, HSI New York and FBI special agents initiated an investigation into an alien smuggling organization operating in South and Central America, focusing on the movement of illegal aliens from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, through South and Central America to the United States. From 2014 to 2016, upwards of 100 people arrested by HSI and the FBI identified Khan as their smuggler. The investigation revealed that Khan and his co-conspirators charged each alien between $3,000 and $15,000 to facilitate their travel to the United States. Several of the individuals smuggled by Khan’s organization had suspected ties to terrorist organizations.

On June 1, 2016, the Brazilian Federal Police executed a search warrant at Khan’s residence in Brazil.

On June 2, 2016, Khan fled Brazil and attempted to travel to Pakistan via a commercial flight transiting through Doha, Qatar.

On June 3, 2016, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia (DCDC) issued an arrest warrant for Khan, charging him with conspiracy to encourage or induce an alien to enter the United States for financial gain. On the same date, authorities at Hamad International Airport in Doha detained Khan pursuant to the arrest warrant.

On July 13, 2016, HSI agents extradited Khan from Qatar to the United States through Washington Dulles International Airport, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection paroled Khan into the United States for criminal prosecution.

President says Mr Mattis will be retiring “with distinction” following hia decision to quit, leading to simmering debate by foreign policy pundits on both sides of the aisle, who viewed him as a sober voice of experience in the ear of a President who had never before held political office or served in the military.

“This is scary,” Senate intelligence committee vice-chairman Mark Warner said on Twitter.

“Secretary Mattis has been an island of stability amidst the chaos of the Trump administration.”
