Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera, known by various aliases, including “El Chapo” and “El Rapido,” was sentenced today by US District Judge Brian M/ Cogan to a life term of imprisonment plus 30 years to run consecutive to the life sentence for being a principal leader of a continuing criminal enterprise – the Mexican organized crime syndicate known as the Sinaloa Cartel – a charge that includes 26 drug-related violations and one murder conspiracy.

The evidence at trial established that Guzman Loera was a principal leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, a Mexico-based international drug trafficking organization responsible for importing and distributing more than a million kilograms of cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine and heroin in the United States.

From the mid-1980s until his arrest in Mexico in 1993, Guzman Loera was a mid-level operative of the Sinaloa Cartel, earning a name for himself and the nickname “El Rapido” for how quickly he transported drugs from Mexico to the United States for the Colombian cartels.

After he escaped from a Mexican prison in 2001 by hiding in a laundry cart, Guzman Loera formed an alliance with fugitive co-defendant Ismael Zambada Garcia and, together, they became the preeminent leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel.

HSI San Francisco agents with the cooperation of Walnut Creek Police Department arrested Paul Fielder, a 60-year-old resident of Suisun City, California, charged, July 15, with 32 counts of sexual abuse of a child under 14 years of age, out on bail of $3.2 million dollars.

He was arrested July 11, by Walnut Creek Police Detectives and HSI special agents when he arrived to meet a minor to engage in sex acts, with the investigation revealing Fielder had been sexually abusing a minor for several years.

“Homeland Security Investigations will continue working with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to rescue victims of crime, while conducting investigations to bring suspects to justice,” Ryan L. Spradlin added.

“However, in too many cases, victims of this type of horrific exploitation often suffer emotional trauma and terrible memories that last a lifetime.” 

“This investigation is a stark reminder that all levels of law enforcement should never hesitate to partner up in the interest of public safety,” he concluded.

In yet another example of the brazen idiocy of the drug cartels, a Colombian drug mule was caught hiding half a kilo of cocaine underneath an oversized toupee, after attracting police attention as he looked nervous and had a disproportionately large hairpiece, with a package with about $47,000 worth of cocaine hidden underneath.

The police department, which quipped the arrest would make the man’s hair “fall out”, released details about the bust for the first time on Tuesday.

“There is no limit to the inventiveness of drug traffickers trying to mock controls,” a statement by Spain’s national police said.

The man was detained last month at Barcelona’s international airport after arriving on a flight from Bogota.

Pentagon spokesman Chris Mitchell said that the Defense Department approved the DHS request to provide 1,000 troops from the Texas National Guard and an additional 1,100 active duty soldiers for deployment at the US southern border with Mexico, with the new forces assisting the 4,500 troops previously deployed to the border with logistics and aerial surveillance.

The deployment of armed forces to the US-Mexico border is part of the Trump administration’s plan to curb illegal immigration coming across it in fulfillment of the president’s election promise.

Trump has also forced Mexico to join his efforts by striking an agreement with its government in June, after promising to abandon plans to impose tariffs on Mexican goods in exchange for the country deploying its own national guard to the border with the US in order to stop migrants from crossing it illegally. In response, Mexico sent around 15,000 troops to the border in fulfilment of the agreement.

  Judge Bowdre also ordered Donald Watkins Sr. to serve five years of supervised release and to pay restitution in the amount of $14,000,100.
