From approximately February 2017 through January 2019, the defendants, a group of foreign citizens, conspired with each other and others to facilitate hundreds of foreign nationals in illegally remaining and working in the United States by actively recruiting them to enroll into a metro Detroit private university that, unbeknownst to the conspirators, was operated by HSI special agents as part of an undercover operation.

Charged in the indictments were:

Barath Kakireddy, 29, of Lake Mary; Suresh Kandala, 31, of Culpeper; Phanideep Karnati, 35, of Louisville, Kentucky; Prem Rampeesa, 26, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Santosh Sama, 28, of Fremont, California; Avinash Thakkallapally, 28, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Aswanth Nune, 26, of Atlanta, Georgia; and Naveen Prathipati, 26, of Dallas, Texas.

 As part of the scheme, the defendants/recruiters assisted foreign citizen “students” in fraudulently obtaining immigration documents from the school and facilitated the creation of false student records, including transcripts, for the purpose of deceiving immigration authorities.

 The illegal documents obtained as a result of the conspirators’ actions were based on false claims, false statements, and fraud since the purported foreign students had no intention of attending school, nor attended a single class, and were not bona fide students.

“We are all aware that international students can be a valuable asset to our country, but as this case shows, the well-intended international student visa program can also be exploited and abused,” stated United States Attorney Matthew Schneider.

PS: News reports indicate that at least 90, and perhaps even 250 more “students” may have fallen in the DHS trap during the last few months, by trying to enrol in the above university.

ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, said the personal data of users was not shared with Chinese authorities, as its subsidiary is facing allegations of “shadow-banning” — yet another kind of censorship to hide topics, with the viral video app is worth $110 billion, and has an audience of 700 million.

An ASPI report accused the TikTok’s parent company ByteDance “collaborates with public security bureaus across China, including in Xinjiang where it plays an active role in disseminating the party-state’s propaganda,” echoeing United States Congress members’ concerns about “the app’s use of censorship to curate and shape information flows and export CCP media narratives to data privacy and the potential for the app to be used as a tool of surveillance in the service of the Chinese party-state.”

The report also names Chinese tech giant Huawei of working “extensively” in Xinjiang and directly with the Chinese Government’s public security bureaus in the region.

Goar died aged 93, seven years after husband and fellow spy Gevork.
