HAGATNA, GUAM – Jesse Mendiola Blas, a former mayor of Yona, Guam, was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 37 months in prison for Extortion Under Color of Official Right, the case

based on an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the FBI and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service:

“Public corruption has far reaching effects on the day to day lives of everyone in society,” said John F. Tobon, Special Agent in Charge for HSI in Guam, Hawaii and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. “Identifying acts of corruption, the proceeds of these acts and bringing those responsible to justice is a top priority for HSI. We will continue to work tirelessly in order to root out corruption.”

Blas, 58, of Yona, was also ordered by the court to three years of supervision following his release from prison, 100 hours of community service, a mandatory $100 special assessment fee and a forfeiture money judgment of $11,700.

The Trump administration is continuing to deport African asylum seekers in its last few days before the inauguration of Joe Biden, who has promised a 100-day suspension of deportations, amid allegations of abuse of detainees, insufficient legal protections and inadequate precautions against Covid infection.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) confirmed a “removal flight” left Louisiana on Thursday bound for Nairobi. The charter plane believed to be carrying Somali, Ethiopian and Kenyan deportees made a refueling stop in Sofia. Immigrant support activists believe the deportees were transferred to commercial planes in Nairobi for transfer to other countries.

There are mounting concerns that there could be a final deportation flight to Africa as late as Tuesday – the day before Biden takes office – as part of a systematic effort by Ice to move as many African asylum seekers as possible out of the country before the end of the zealously anti-immigrant Trump administration.

The last few months of 2020 saw a rise in deportations of African nationals, despite ongoing political and sectarian violence in Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries to which deportees were returned.

A team of scientists from China’s Nanjing University has made a quantum internet breakthrough by successfully sending a pair of entangled photons after “splitting a single photon with a crystal” with a laser installed on one of the drones being a mile apart from each other, according to a new report.

LOS ANGELES — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) officers, in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), arrested one of ICE’s Most Wanted fugitives in a targeted enforcement action in Anaheim, California, a man identified as Emrah Gocekli, aka Vandoff Shawn Thomas, 33, a citizen of Turkey,  who became the subject of a criminal arrest warrant, issued by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, following his 2018 violation for escaping from federal immigration custody:

“After more than two years of evasion, this convicted felon and fugitive criminal alien has been apprehended thanks to the diligent efforts of our officers and their coordinated efforts with the USMS,” said ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Los Angeles Field Office Director John Cantú.

“Our officers have taken an oath to enforce and uphold the immigration laws enacted by Congress, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to promote public safety and national security with honor and professionalism.”
