The temperature in France surpassed 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) for the first time as Europe wilted in a major heatwave, state weather forecaster Meteo-France said. The previous record stood at 44.1 degrees Celsius in the same area during the notorious August 2003 heatwave.

Molnupiravir is the first oral antiviral treatment for Covid19 to report clinical trial results.
An experimental drug for severe Covid19 cuts the risk of hospitalization or death by about half, interim clinical trial results suggest.
The tablet – molnupiravir – was given twice a day to patients recently diagnosed with the disease.
US drug-maker Merck said its results were so positive that outside monitors had asked to stop the trial early.
It said it would apply for emergency use authorization for the drug in the US in the next two weeks.
