2…………> Appalachian Opioid Crackdown: Scores Arrested

Attorney General William P. Barr and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex M. Azar II, together with multiple law enforcement partners, today announced enforcement actions involving 60 charged defendants across 11 federal districts, including 31 doctors, seven pharmacists, eight nurse practitioners, and seven other licensed medical professionals, for their alleged participation in the illegal prescribing and distributing of opioids and other dangerous narcotics and for health care fraud schemes.  In addition, HHS announced today that since June 2018, it has excluded over 2,000 individuals from participation in Medicare, Medicaid and all other Federal health care programs, which includes more than 650 providers excluded for conduct related to opioid diversion and abuse.  Since July 2017, DEA has issued 31 immediate suspension orders, 129 orders to show cause, and received 1,386 surrenders for cause nationwide for violations of the Controlled Substances Act.

“The opioid epidemic is the deadliest drug crisis in American history, and Appalachia has suffered the consequences more than perhaps any other region,” Attorney General William P. Barr said.

“But the Department of Justice is doing its part to help end this crisis.  One of the Department’s most promising new initiatives is the Criminal Division’s Appalachian Regional Prescription Opioid Strike Force, which began its work in December.  Just four months later, this team of federal agents and 14 prosecutors has charged 60 defendants for alleged crimes related to millions of prescription opioids.  I am grateful to the Criminal Division, their U.S. Attorney partners, and to the members of the strike force for this outstanding work that holds the promise of saving many lives in Appalachian communities.”

3…………> I Ain’t Dead Yet: Brain Research

In a study financed mostly by the National Institutes of Health, with 32 test organs coming from pigs killed for food at a local slaughterhouse, scientists were able to monitor some neuron activity within the brains of pigs that had been pronounced dead hours before, raising hopes for some medical advances and questions about the definition of death.

Researchers are emphasizing that the brains could not think or sense anything, and restoring consciousness was not a goal of the study, yet the analysis of the data found evidence that brain cells were absorbing blood sugar and oxygen hours after the pigs were slaughtered.

While lauding the experiment, some researchers have questioned whether it could become an ethical minefield.

4…………> Comrade UN New Bargaining Chip: A Missile

In yet another round of horse trading between Comrade Un, and his friend President Trump, the military of North Korea fire tested a new weapon system, described as a “tactical guided weapon” carrying a “powerful warhead,”  with the Supreme leader present at the test, marking the first publicized weapons’ development since the Hanoi talks.

The White House has been so far silent, and so have been President Trump’s tweets, mostly attacking the “enemy of the people, a.k.a the “Fake News” media.

2…………> Trump’s ICE Broom: Dozens Illegals Arrested

A Mexican national who was previously deported, with convictions for indecent assault of a minor and DUI, is among 123 foreign nationals taken into custody during a month-long operation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in New Jersey. The operation, which was spearheaded by ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), targeted at-large criminal aliens, illegal re-entrants and other immigration violators who had prior arrests or convictions for DUI.

Of those arrested during the operation, 90 percent had prior criminal convictions and/or pending criminal charges.

“The remarkable results of our officers and law enforcement partners highlight ICE’s ongoing commitment to public safety,” said John Tsoukaris, Field Office Director of ERO Newark.

“This operation focuses on the arrest of individuals convicted of serious crimes and are a threat to public safety. Because of the targeted efforts of these professional and dedicated officers, there are 123 fewer criminals in our communities.”

The individuals arrested throughout New Jersey were nationals of Brazil (3), Costa Rica (3), Dominican Republic (1), Ecuador (16), El Salvador (8), Guatemala (24), Honduras (14), Jamaica (1), Mexico (41), Nicaragua (1), Peru (6), Poland (2), Spain (2), and Trinidad (1).

3…………> Health Care Fraud In The Billions:Florida

A federal jury found a South Florida health care facility owner guilty today for his role in the largest health care fraud scheme ever charged by the Justice Department, involving over $1.3 billion in fraudulent claims to Medicare and Medicaid for services that were not provided, were not medically necessary or were procured through the payment of kickbacks.

After an eight-week trial, Philip Esformes, 50, of Miami Beach, Florida, was convicted of one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States, two counts of receipt of kickbacks in connection with a federal health care program, four counts of payment of kickbacks in connection with a federal health care program, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, nine counts of money laundering, two counts of conspiracy to commit federal program bribery, and one count of obstruction of justice before U.S. District Judge Robert N. Scola Jr. of the Southern District of Florida.  Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.

Philip Esformes orchestrated one of the largest health care fraud schemes in U.S. history, defrauding Medicare and Medicaid to the tune of over a billion dollars,” said Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski

“I commend our dedicated prosecutors and law enforcement partners for their professionalism and unyielding pursuit of justice on behalf of American taxpayers and vulnerable beneficiaries who, as a result of Esformes’s crimes, were denied the level of care that they needed and deserved.”

4…………> Trump The Ax Man: Secrete Service Head Out

Donald Trump has ordered the firing of Secret Service director Randolph “Tex” Alles, according to the White House, amid a shake-up in the upper echelon of the Department of Homeland Security, selecting career Secret Service official James Murray to lead the agency.

Mr. Alles’s departure stems from a personality conflict within the service, as  a Homeland Security “Perestroika” that began last week, and White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said the new Secret Service director reports to the Homeland Security secretary.
