OMAHA, Neb. – A Mexican citizen was sentenced to eight months in prison for two counts of making a false claim of citizenship and two counts of making a false representation of a social security number. This case came to the attention of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) after a victim (Victim 1) contacted their tip line to report that she was the victim of identity theft. Victim 1 became aware that her identity had been stolen while filing her taxes and after being contacted by her college informing her that she was in jeopardy of losing her financial aid due to the income being earned in her name in Nebraska.

In October 2017, Griselda Genchi-Garcia, 27, a citizen of Mexico, applied for asylum to the United States from Mexico via the San Ysidro Port of Entry, California. She was given a notice to appear and informed she was a noncitizen and not a citizen or national of the United States. Genchi-Garcia was not in possession of a valid unexpired immigrant visa, reentry permit, border crossing card, or other valid entry document. Immigration proceedings were initiated, and Genchi-Garcia was released on parole due to humanitarian concerns, pending interview with an asylum officer.

DENVER — A Colorado man was sentenced to 10.5 years in federal prison following his prior guilty plea to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute controlled substances.

Eber Uriel Perez-Ramirez, 29, of Aurora, Colorado was remanded immediately after sentencing.

“HSI working with the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) helped disrupt a transnational drug trafficking organization with direct ties to a Mexican cartel that sought to bring illegal drugs into Colorado,” said Steven Cagen, Special Agent in Charge of HSI Denver.

“Strong partnerships among federal, state and local law enforcement agencies are critical to identifying and dismantling criminal enterprises that profit from illicit drugs. We’re grateful to the United States Attorney’s Office for ensuring Perez-Ramirez faced justice.”

The Main Cathedral of the Russian Armed Forces had about 4,000 people attending the midnight Easter service, according to a Defense Ministry spokesperson, as Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin attended the midnight mass along with the Russian President.

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said ahead of the Easter service that even though the coronavirus had paralyzed people’s lives, churches and cathedrals were starting to fill up again as the infection subsides.

In his holiday address, Patriarch Kirill said that the coronavirus pandemic has reminded people of how fragile their lives are, how important responsibility is, such as adhering to safety regulations, and how valuable in-person interaction turns out to be, as compared to online communication.

CHICAGO — A Chinese national living in Illinois was sentenced to 14 years in prison for laundering illegal narcotics proceeds on behalf of drug traffickers in Mexico, and Xianbing Gan, 51, was remanded immediately after sentencing.

“The defendant was part of a recent phenomenon in which a relatively small network of Chinese money brokers based in Mexico have come to dominate international money laundering markets,” Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sean J.B. Franzblau and Richard M. Rothblatt argued in the government’s sentencing memorandum. “Like defendant, many of these brokers are also engaged in a legitimate business and use that business as a cover to further money laundering activity. It does not matter that defendant never personally distributed narcotics – drug distribution and money laundering are two-sides of the same malignant coin.”
