DETROIT — ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Detroit and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan announced Monday the seizure of a website located at http://lafoauto.com/, following an HSI etroit investigation with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Visitors to the site will now find a seizure notice bearing law enforcement shields.

HSI etroit seized the internet domain http://lafoauto.com/ pursuant to an international arms-trafficking investigation. HSI determined that more than 350 suppressors seized by law enforcement across the county were purchased from the website and smuggled into the United States from China as automotive parts. Suppressors, also called silencers, reduce the sound and muzzle flash generated from a gunshot. Without proper license, they are illegal to purchase or possess in many U.S. states. The website advertised the suppressors as automotive components but images on the site clearly resembled firearms components.

Ghislaine Maxwell, the British socialite and ex-girlfriend of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, is due to appear at a bail hearing via video link, so the court could determine whether she stays in prison while awaiting trial on charges of trafficking minors for Epstein.

Her lawyers have asked for her release on bail in the millions because of the risk of getting coronavirus in jail, after being arrested on 2 July, and if the charges against her are proved true, she faces up to 35 years prison if convicted.

Prosecutors have charged that between 1994 and 1997 Ms. Maxwell helped Epstein groom girls as young as 14. Epstein died in prison on 10 August as he awaited his trial on sex trafficking charges. His death was determined to be suicide.

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) announced modifications to temporary exemptions for nonimmigrant students taking online classes due to the pandemic for the fall 2020 semester. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security plans to publish the procedures and responsibilities in the Federal Register as a Temporary Final Rule.

Temporary exemptions for the fall 2020 semester include:

Nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States. The U.S. Department of State will not issue visas to students enrolled in schools and/or programs that are fully online for the fall semester nor will U.S. Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States. Active students currently in the United States enrolled in such programs must depart the country or take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction to remain in lawful status. If not, they may face immigration consequences including, but not limited to, the initiation of removal proceedings.

Nonimmigrant F-1 students attending schools operating under normal in-person classes are bound by existing federal regulations. Eligible F students may take a maximum of one class or three credit hours online.

Nonimmigrant F-1 students attending schools adopting a hybrid model—that is, a mixture of online and in person classes—will be allowed to take more than one class or three credit hours online. These schools must certify to SEVP, through the Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status,” certifying that the program is not entirely online, that the student is not taking an entirely online course load this semester, and that the student is taking the minimum number of online classes required to make normal progress in their degree program. The above exemptions do not apply to F-1 students in English language training programs or M-1 students pursuing vocational degrees, who are not permitted to enroll in any online courses.

Victims have described Maxwell as his chief enabler, recruiting and grooming young girls for abuse.Prosecutors have said she “poses an extreme risk of flight,has absolutely no reason to stay in the United States and face the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence”.

Mr. Vauhxx Booker, a member of the Monroe County Human Rights Commission, Bloomington, and an Indiana resident,  said he was assaulted and threatened with a noose by a group of men near the shore of Lake Monroe:

“…Almost the victim of an attempted lynching” by strangers, when he and some friends were at Lake Monroe to watch the lunar eclipse, when they were approached by a group of white men who claimed that Booker and company were trespassing on private property, with one of the men was wearing a hat with a Confederate flag on it.

After issuing an apology, the two continued on their way to the site. It was later confirmed by event organizers to Booker that the individuals they’d encountered were not the property owners. However, that was not the last that was heard from the individuals.

A San Fernando Valley man was sentenced today to 259 months in federal prison for overseeing a long-running 33 million credit card, loan and real estate fraud scheme using stolen identities — primarily those of children.

Turhan Lemont Armstrong, 50, of Northridge, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner, who also ordered him to pay 33,305,609 in restitution. Judge Klausner also has ordered the forfeiture of two homes – one in Northridge, the other in Perris – purchased with illicit funds obtained from the scheme.

The investigation of Armstrong was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Los Angeles. Substantial assistance was provided by the Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the North Miami Beach Police Department.

At the conclusion of a two-week trial that ended in May 2019, a jury found Armstrong guilty of all 51 counts in a federal grand jury indictment. The indictment included charges of conspiracy to commit financial institution fraud, financial institution fraud, making false statements to financial institutions, conspiracy to commit money laundering, money laundering, conspiracy to commit access device (credit card) fraud, access device fraud, interstate transportation of stolen vehicles, and aggravated identity theft.

Pharmaceutical company Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation (Novartis), based in East Hanover, New Jersey, has agreed to pay over 42 million in separate settlements resolving claims that it violated the False Claims Act (FCA).  The first settlement pertains to the company’s alleged illegal use of three foundations as conduits to pay the copayments of Medicare patients taking Novartis’s drugs Gilenya and Afinitor.  The second settlement resolves claims arising from the company’s alleged payments of kickbacks to doctors.

“Through this settlement and others, the government has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring that drug companies do not use kickbacks to influence the drugs prescribed by doctors or purchased by patients,” said Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt of the Department of Justice’s Civil Division. 

“We will continue to safeguard the Medicare program from kickbacks and their pernicious effects, including the undermining of important cost-control mechanisms instituted by Congress.”

The Anti-Kickback Statute prohibits anyone from offering or paying, directly or indirectly, any remuneration — which includes money or any other thing of value — to induce referrals of items or services covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and other federally funded programs.  This prohibition extends not only to improper payments to providers, but also to the improper payment of patients’ copay obligations.

Ghislaine Maxwell, the former girlfriend and longtime associate of dead accused sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, has been arrested by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in New Hampshire, and is charged to have assisted in grooming minors for sexual abuse at the hands of the infamous abuser, some ten months after he died in a federal prison in August 2019

The 58-year-old, who lived for years with Epstein, was taken into custody at about 8:30am on Thursday (local time)by the FBI, and spokesman said they had been keeping tabs on her for some time:

“More recently we learned she had slithered away to a gorgeous property in New Hampshire, continuing to live a life of privilege while her victims live with the trauma inflicted upon them years ago,”said William Sweeney, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s New York office, after Ms. Maxwell bought the property, located more than 300 miles north of New York.

Billions worth of valuable metals such as gold, silver and copper were discarded as electronic waste produced globally, with the total jumping to a record 53.6 million tons (Mt), or 7.3 kilogram per person, according to a recent report. 

Growing demand for electronic gadgets, mostly with short life cycles and few options for repair, has caused e-waste — discarded products with a battery or plug — to surge by more than a fifth in the past 5 years, as the report forecasts the amount of e-waste generated to top 74 Mt by 2030:

“We are seeing a growing middle class in many countries around the world, which a few years ago were really typical developing countries. And there is a very large backlog demand here”, said Mr.Rüdiger Kühr, director of the Sustainable Cycles Program at the United Nations University (UNU) and a co-author of the report.
