“I applaud ICE HSI and its partners for their success in protecting the public, including our first responders, from dangerous counterfeits and schemes to defraud the public during the pandemic,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas.

WASHINGTON – The Justice Department announced today that Sonia Tabizada, 36, of San Jacinto, California, was sentenced to 15 months and 13 days for intentionally obstructing persons in the enjoyment of their free exercise of religious beliefs by threatening to bomb the Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School in Washington, D.C.:

“No school and no child should be subjected to death threats, because of their religious beliefs,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Pamela S. Karlan for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “The Department of Justice will continue to vigorously prosecute violent threats motivated by bias.” 

“The citizens of the District of Columbia and our country are entitled to freely exercise their religious beliefs and to be free from threats of violence based on bias—be it against religion, race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, and other protected characteristics.  The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia is committed to protecting the civil rights of all our citizens and will do so by vigorously enforcing both federal and local hate crime laws.” said Acting U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips for the District of Columbia.

“The free exercise of religion is one of our nation’s most sacred constitutional rights,” said Assistant Director in Charge Steven M. D’Antuono of the FBI Washington Field Office.

“The FBI will continue to prioritize threats of violence and civil rights violations to ensure every citizen and community is free to exercise all of their protected liberties without fear and threats of violence.”

Tabizada was also sentenced to two years of supervised release with special conditions. If Tabizada wants to leave the country she must contact the court and request a modification of the special conditions.

A video of a satellite feed created using an onboard tracker which shows the Ever Given cargo container ship veering in the Suez Canal and running aground, one of the world’s most vital lines blocked by a 400m-long container ship, disrupting international trade. According to the statement by Evergreen Marine Corp., a major Taiwan-based shipping company that operates the ship, the vessel crashed due to strong winds as it entered the canal.

After the Suez Canal was blocked following a 400-metre-long Japanese container vessel called the Ever Given running aground and causing massive delays, at least 320 ships were idling in a traffic jam as the  container ship continued to impede the Suez Canal since losing control on Tuesday, according to the head of the waterway authority:

“At the moment, 321 ships are waiting for their turn to pass through the Suez Canal due to the situation,” he told a press conference, adding that fourteen tugs are involved in the operation to free the stranded ship.

Germany  declared the whole of France a “high-risk” area for coronavirus infections, a move that means travelers need to show a negative COVID-19 test and quarantine upon arrival, since all French overseas departments, is now considered “at particularly high risk of infection due to a particularly high number of cases”, Germany’s Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases said. Anyone travelling from France will have to be able to produce a negative test that is less than 48 hours old upon entry, before beginning a 10-day quarantine period in Germany.

Slovakia and the Czech Republic were meanwhile downgraded from the highest alert red list of “virus variants regions” to “high-risk” areas. Austria’s hard-hit Tyrol region, which borders Germany, is also no longer considered a virus variant region and is now classified as a lower-level risk area, RKI added.
