2…………> Tear Gas At Migrants: US agents

As US Border Patrol helicopters flew overhead, agents closed the busiest border crossing with Mexico after police broke up a protest of migrants in Tijuana, scattering demonstrators toward the border where US agents hurled tear gas canisters.

Several hundred migrants pushed past blockade of Mexican police near the crossing, with children screaming and coughing when migrants opened a small hole in concertina wire at a gap on the Mexican side of a levee, at which point US agents fired tear gas at them.

“We ran, but when you run the gas asphyxiates you more,” a woman said while cradling her three-year-old daughter Valery in her arms.

Mexico’s Milenio TV also showed images of several migrants at the border trying to jump over the fence.

3…………> Russia Seizes Ukraine Ships: Crimea

Russia fired on three Ukrainian naval vessels off the Crimean Peninsula in a significant escalation of tensions between the two countries, capturing two gunboats and a tug, and leaving some Ukrainian crew members injured.

Ukrainian MPs are due to vote on declaring martial law after Russia accused the Ukrainian ships of illegally entering its waters and placed a tanker under a bridge in the Kerch Strait – the only access to the Sea of Azov, which is shared between the two countries.

4…………> Mexico To Deport US border Attackers

Mexico’s interior ministry said all those who were identified as having tried to cross would be deported immediately, adding that, “far from helping their objectives,” the migrants’ actions had violated the legal migration framework and could have led to a “serious incident.”

The group was rounded up after trying to cross the border “violently” and “illegally,” the ministry said in a statement, with video footage showing dozens of people – including women and children – running towards the fence that separates the two countries near the city of Tijuana. They were repelled by tear gas used by US border officers.

1…………> Applied Global Warming: US Economic Losses

“With continued growth in emissions at historical rates, annual losses in some economic sectors are projected to reach hundreds of billions of dollars by the end of the century—more than the current gross domestic product (GDP) of many U.S. states. The full extent of climate change risks to interconnected systems, many of which span regional and national boundaries, is often greater than the sum of risks to individual sectors,” a newly released report said.

The National Climate Assessment studied looked the impact climate change would have not just on the economy but all sectors of American society and found that damage to the economy could be massive, costing the United States hundreds of billions of dollars every year by 2050 unless drastic measures are taken to reduce carbon emissions.

2…………> Health-Care Fraud: Dallas

A federal grand jury indicted two clinic workers yesterday for their roles in a scheme involving approximately $5.9 million in allegedly fraudulent Department of Labor claims for unprovided drug screening and improperly coded physical therapy and reported writing services.

Melissa Sumerour, 47, of Waco, Texas, and Latosha Morgan, 41, of Dallas, Texas were each indicted on one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud from January 2011 to March 2017, with the defendants and their co-conspirators allegedly engaged in an “upcoding” scheme to bill DOL for more expensive services than those that were actually performed, if any.

The defendants reportedly defrauded DOL of approximately $5.9 million through fraudulent worker’s compensation claims. The indictment alleges that Sumerour and Morgan worked at clinics in Temple and Fort Worth, Texas, respectively, which treated almost exclusively DOL patients and that they routinely billed for higher reimbursable services to earn bonuses based on the percentage that their clinics charged. The Fraud Section leads the Medicare Fraud Strike Force, has charged nearly 4,000 defendants who have collectively billed the Medicare program for more than $14 billion.

3…………> “Viva La Liberte”: Tear Gas & Water Cannons In Paris

“We know there are ultra-right and ultra-left infiltrators. You can also expect gangs from the suburbs and ‘black-blocks,'” said Denis Jacob, secretary-general of police union Alternative Police.

He was referring to a militant protest force of almost 30,000 protesters as police have fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse violent crowds in the capital of the Islamic Sheikdom of France, Paris, who are angry over rising fuel costs and Grand Rabbinical Ayatollah President Emmanuel Macron’s economic policies.

French protesters are angry about the sharp rise in taxes on petrol and diesel, an initiative designed to move people to electric vehicles. The security forces are fighting the protests could be co-opted by fringe political extremists that lead to two people have been killed and 606 injured during the second weekend of “yellow vest” protests that have disrupted across France.

Some protesters sang the national anthem while others carried signs with slogans saying “Macron, resignation” and “Macron, thief.”

2…………> Biometric Hack: Kumar, Is That You?

India’s highest court has upheld the legality of the nation’s controversial biometric identity database, saying it does not violate citizens’ rights to privacy.

Indian residents cannot receive welfare food rations and other benefits without being entered into Aadhaar, despite a concern the system is vulnerable to security breaches as an Indian newspaper has already bought access to personal data by paying hackers about $10.

With more than 1 billion people already enrolled in the database, and all residents of India required to hand over their details to the giant database, including their iris scans and fingerprints if they want essential services, the worst is yet to come.

3…………> Cold War 2.0: The Motion Picture

A Cold War with 21st-century characteristics between US and China?

Their economic interdependence should be a powerful restraint on the worst instincts of the two countries, since China and the US have also established an extensive range of bilateral mechanisms to manage their complicated relationship.

There are around 1,000 meetings between the states every year, ranging from summit level down to mid-ranking officials, covering issues from trade and investment to coastguard and fisheries. The two countries know they have to work hard to ensure the competitive dynamic does not spiral out of control. And of course, both sides’ nuclear weapons act as a tremendous disciplining force, providing even the most heated of relationships can remain short of outright conflict.

Still, despite of their many meetings, there are good reasons to think a Cold War 2.0 might be a good deal closer than we realize.
