Microsoft Corp introduced an important security patch for its Windows operating system, after the US National Security Agency tipped off the company to a serious flaw, that could allow a hacker to forge digital certificates used by some versions of Windows to authenticate and secure data. Exploiting the flaw could have potentially serious consequences for Windows systems and users.

NSA official Anne Neuberger noted that operators of classified networks had already been prodded to install the update and everyone else should now “expedite the implementation of the patch.”

The Microsoft patch marks the first time the NSA has publicly claimed credit for prompting a software security update, although the agency said it has alerted companies in the past to flaws in their products.

Ms Neuberger said the agency was striving for more transparency with the information security research community.

“Part of building trust is showing the data,” she told reporters minutes before the patch went live.

The NSA and Microsoft said they had not seen any evidence that the flaw had previously been abused, but both urged Windows users to deploy the update as soon as possible.

“The biggest risk is to secure communications,” said Adam Meyers, vice president of intelligence for security firm CrowdStrike.

The Chinese navy is now in possession of the largest missile destroyer in Asia and the second-largest in the world, following the commission of the Type 055 destroyer Nanchang, as it officially joined the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) in a Sunday ceremony in Shandong’s port city of Qingdao, following sea trials that the advanced warship completed last year,and has been working with the fleet since it was launched in 2017.

“Nanchang made an appearance at the parade as part of the celebration, but much of its equipment – including radars, communications and weapons systems and other works – had not actually been finished,” a PLA insider disclosed about the warship’s participation in April 2019 celebrations commemorating the 70th anniversary of the PLAN’s founding.

Weighing in at 13,000 tons of displacement, the 540 fee-long Type 055 is the largest such warship in Asia and the second-largest in the world after the US Navy’s Zumwalt-class destroyers, which are slightly larger at about 15,000 tons. That’s nearly one-third larger than the US Navy’s staple destroyer, the Arleigh Burke-class, and twice the size of Russia’s Sovremenny-class destroyers. It has an estimated 30-knot top speed, according to Jane’s, roughly comparable to the other two warships.

Australian firefighters said that the large “megafire” with an area of around 1.5 million acres, which formed along the border between the Australian states of Victoria and New South Wales last week, is finally under control. However, the rainfall forecast for next week is unlikely to put out the hundreds of remaining fires.

The megablaze formed near Tooma, a village community in the eastern part of the Riverina and southwest of Canberra, last week. On Monday, New South Wales Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons commented on the enormous fire, noting that there was a “small area of burning still to complete” but that the “containment prognosis looks promising,” AFP reported.

“It will absolutely bring a bit of relief this week for the community. But in saying that, we want people to remain vigilant, these fires are certainly not out,” she added.

Officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), assisted by the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) Fugitive Task Force, arrested Rene Antonio “Scrapy” Hernandez-Mejia, a Salvadoran national wanted in El Salvador, Jan. 8.

According to a USMS, Hernandez-Mejia was wanted for being part of the 18 Revolutionary Pandilla, a terrorist organization which is a faction of an El Salvadorian gang called Shadow Park Locos. It is alleged that this gang is involved with crimes such as homicide, extortion, and terrorist activities.
“ICE is committed to removing dangerous criminal aliens like Antonio Hernandez-Mejia from the community,” said Ernesto Santacruz, ICE ERO deputy field office director for Las Vegas.

“This arrest is a testament to the strong partnerships between ICE and our local, state, federal and international law enforcement agencies. These coordinated efforts are crucial to public safety and help to expedite the removal of criminals from the streets.”
