Erdogan’s ruling party lost control of Istanbul after a re-run of the city’s mayoral election, as the candidate for the main opposition party, Ekrem Imamoglu, won 54% of the vote with nearly all ballots counted, after a surprise victory in March which was annulled after the ruling AK party complained of irregularities.
His opponent, ex-PM Binali Yildirim, conceded the election results, and President Recep Tayyip “Sultan” Erdogan congratulated the winner.
But the result is being seen as a major setback for Mr. Erdogan, who has previously said that “whoever wins Istanbul, wins Turkey”.
In his victory speech, Mr. Imamoglu said the result marked a “new beginning” for both the city and the country.

President Trump is interested in direct talks with Iran without preconditions, dismissing the European point of view that Tehran is complying with the 2015 nuclear deal, arguing that it is EU business interests talking:
“I don’t care about the Europeans,” he said. “The Europeans are going out and making a lot of money […] In France, they’re selling cars to Iran. They’re doing other things.”
Trump said he would accept any kind of deal with Iran, as long as it prevents Tehran from getting nuclear weapons, regardless if the deal is bilateral or multilateral:
“I don’t care which, what kind of a deal. It can be separate or it could be total,” he said.
Speaking about his reasons to abandon the treaty, Trump noted that, according to the deal, Iran has limited its uranium enrichment to 3.67 percent for 15 years.
Once the deal expired, Tehran would have had a “free pass” toward obtaining nuclear weapons, Trump said.
“There’s like a short number of years left. After a very small number of years, […] they have a free pass to nuclear weapons,” he said.
“I think they have violated the agreement because I think in the areas that we’re not allowed to inspect they’re doing things. And I think they have been for years,” he said.
