A Bangladeshi national formerly residing in Monterrey, Mexico, was sentenced to 46 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for his role in a scheme to smuggle aliens from Mexico into the United States, after Moktar Hossain admitted that from March 2017 to August 2018, he conspired to bring, and did bring, Bangladeshi nationals to the United States at the Texas border in exchange for payment. Hossain operated out of Monterrey, Mexico, where he maintained a hotel that housed aliens on their way to the United States. Hossain paid drivers to transport the aliens to the U.S. border, and gave the aliens instructions on how to cross the Rio Grande river. 

“The defendant was a key player in an organized smuggling network that operated for profit and preyed on Bangladeshi nationals who wanted to enter the United States illegally,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General David P. Burns of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.

“This sentence serves as a clear deterrent to participants of such transnational criminal organizations who seek to undermine the security of our borders by illegally facilitating the travel of foreigners into the United States for a financial gain.”

“Border security and national security are one in the same,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Patrick for the Southern District of Texas.

“We must know who is coming into the country, and we cannot allow unfiltered access. My office continues to work with all our partners executing this mission.”

Mass infections are putting pressure on hospitals across Europe during winter, as the World Health Organization (WHO) has called on European countries to do more to curb a new variant of coronavirus that was first detected in the UK, and director Hans Kluge said tougher measures were needed to “flatten the steep vertical line” of rising cases in some countries saying 22 European countries now have cases of the variant, calling this “an alarming situation”.

First detected in November, the variant has driven a spike in cases in the UK, its spread has concerned many European countries that have already imposed full national lockdowns to tackle a marked rise in infections during winter, and health experts say the variant is considerably more transmissible than previous strains but not necessarily any more dangerous for those infected.

They have also played down the possibility that vaccines will not be as effective against the variant.

HOUSTON – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Houston announced Wednesday the results of a recent enforcement action targeting criminal aliens who are alleged to have illegally reentered the United States after having previously been removed.

From Nov. 1, 2020, through Dec. 31, 2020, ERO Houston arrested nine criminal aliens in the greater Houston area after securing criminal arrest warrants for illegal reentry.

An alien who illegally re-enters the United States after having been previously deported commits a federal offense, which is punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison, if convicted.

In addition to their prior immigration-related offenses, all nine of the individuals arrested had previously been convicted of other criminal offenses and several are documented gang members.

His use of the Presidency to destroy trust in our election and to poison our respect for fellow citizens has been enabled by pseudo political leaders whose names will live in infamy as profiles in cowardice,” Mattis said in a press statement. 

“Our Constitution and our Republic will overcome this stain and We the People will come together again in our never-ending effort to form a more perfect Union, while Mr. Trump will deservedly be left a man without a country,” the retired general suggested.

They were confronted by plainclothes officers, and an officer pulled out a weapon and fired it.

President Trump has been discussing invoking martial law to overturn the results of the 2020 election and seizing supposedly fraudulent voting machines that — according to a wild conspiracy theory being pushed by people invited to the Oval Office to discuss the matter — were used to rob him of a second term, and all this during the final days of his presidency.

It has turned to be the most extreme example of Trump’s post-election behavior, which has grown more erratic and dangerous to our democracy by the day, leading to his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol in protest while Congress voted to certify Joe Biden’s election victory.

How can he be stopped? 

More than 50 years ago, the framers of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution foresaw the possibility of a president’s behavior becoming so unstable that it would prove necessary to have some constitutional mechanism to remove him immediately from office. Section Four of that amendment provides a process for doing so: If the vice-president and the majority of the Cabinet decide that, for whatever reason, the president has become unfit to carry out the powers and duties of the office and they transmit a letter to Congress to that effect, then the vice-president becomes the acting president and remains so unless and until Congress refuses to allow that transfer of power to stand.
