Second only to the United States in both cases and deaths, Brazil passed 1 million coronavirus cases, and is approaching 50,000 deaths as it struggles with a tense political climate and worsening economic outlook, with the virus spreading freely across the vast country, undermining support for right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, and further raising fears of economic collapse.

The country reported 1,032,913 confirmed cases, with 1,206 new deaths to take total official fatalities to 48,954, and it is very likely to surpass the 50,000 deaths level shortly.

At the same time, officials in Beijing are testing all food and parcel delivery workers for coronavirus in an effort to rein in a new outbreak.
India has the fourth-highest number of COVID-19 cases, but the Government denies community transmission:

“India is such a large country and prevalence is very low. India is not in community transmission,” Balram Bhargava, director general of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), said last week.

“India has not declared community transmission simply because there isn’t any,” said economics professor Raghbendra Jha, head of the Australia South Asia Research Centre at ANU’s Crawford School of Public Policy.

“India has a high number of cases but the number of deaths is low in comparison to many other much more developed countries.”

The lawyer, who represents several African-American families, members of which have been killed by white police officers, warned that taking the action of simply removing the monuments without understanding “how we can learn from those things”, could repeat history.
