Hurricane Barry is nearing landfall with sustained wind speeds of 75mph with higher gusts, as the storm is approaching the Louisiana coast with strength of a category one hurricane, creeping up north-west at a speed of just 6 mph, drowning everything with heavy rainfall as it hugs inland.
The storm is set to most heavily impact an area west of New Orleans and officials warn floods and storm surges could be life-threatening, as thousands have been evacuated from at-risk areas and others have been told to shelter in place, and 100,000 households are already without power.
The Louisiana National Guard say 3,800 ground and air troops have been deployed to the state, with the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) confirmed Storm Barry had strengthened into the first hurricane of the 2019 Atlantic season.
All flights in and out of Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport on Saturday have been cancelled, and President Trump declared a federal state of emergency in Louisiana on Thursday.

The Chancellor of the Islamic Merkeldom of Germany said that citizens have a “duty” to stand up to right-wing extremists just as the resistance faced down Adolf Hitler, on the 75th anniversary of the failed assassination attempt on the Nazi dictator, paying a tribute to those who opposed the Fuehrer’s rule, and stood up to take action.
July 20 marks the anniversary of the 1944 bomb plot to murder Hitler and remove the Nazi Party from power, as the attempt failed with Hitler surviving with mild injuries, leading to the execution of the plot’s “Capel Meister”, Col. Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, and 200 co-conspirators.
“They showed that they followed their conscience and thereby shaped a part of Germany’s history that otherwise would have been solely defined by the darkness of National Socialism,” Merkel said.
“We, too, have a duty today to stand up against all those tendencies that want to destroy democracy,” the Chancellor added.

The fatal attraction of Facebook to now defunct Cambridge Analytica, the British political consulting firm that used the data of millions of users to build psychologically profiles of US voters, and target them with material to help Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, with the data acquired via a quiz, designed to harvest not only the user data of the person taking part in the quiz, but also the data of their friends, an idiotic enterprise that was hit by US regulators with a record $5bn fine on the company to settle an investigation into data privacy violations.
The settlement, which amounts to around one quarter of the company’s yearly profit, will reignite criticism from those who say this amounts to little more than a slap on the wrist on the already heavily attacked company boss, labeled by many as “Gruppen Fuehrer” Zuckerberg for suppressing the 1st Amendment rights of many accounts, amongst other violations, labeling some prominent and deeply religious Jews like Ben Shapiro as “Nazis”, simply because of their support to President Trump.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has been investigating allegations that political consultancy Cambridge Analytica improperly obtained the data of up to 87 million Facebook users, with the settlement was approved by the FTC in a 3-2 vote.
“With the FTC either unable or unwilling to put in place reasonable guardrails to ensure that user privacy and data are protected, it’s time for Congress to act,” US Senator Mark Warner said.
