The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has announced the successful free flight test of an air-breathing hypersonic cruise missile demonstrator developed by Raytheon and Northrop Grumman. This comes more than a year after the announcement of successful captive-carry tests of this weapon, as well as a competing design from Lockheed Martin, as part of the Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept program, or HAWC.

MADRID (Sputnik) – The volcano on the island of La Palma, a part of Spain’s Canary Islands, continued to erupt after a lull of several hours, the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute said on Monday.

“Images of the ash emissions that are being observed in the last hours,” the institute tweeted, attaching relevant photos.

Earlier in the day, the institute reported that volcanic tremors were nearly absent, but failed to specify whether the eruption had completely or only temporarily stopped.

On Monday, Senate Republicans plan to block a key bill to raise the US debt ceiling, a scenario that may result in a government shutdown early next month.
The US government may face the “X Date” in the first quarter of October, when the Treasury Department is expected to “exhaust its cash on hand” to pay its bills, a new analysis has claimed.
According to the forecast by the Washington-based non-profit think tank Bipartisan Policy Centre (BPC), if US policymakers “do not act on the debt limit, Treasury will most likely have insufficient cash to meet all its financial obligations sometime between 15 October and 4 November”.

 The Spanish authorities closed the airport on the island of La Palma because of ash clouds from volcanic eruptions in Spain’s Canaries archipelago, as the volcano Cumbre Vieja erupts again following a week of continuous eruptions.
So far, new openings were reported on the volcano, the 19 September eruption has destroyed 320 buildings and 154 hectares of land, and the volcanic activity is likely to last from 24 to 84 days.

A dramatic image shows a house in the Canary Islands that has managed to escape lava from an erupting volcano. People on social media have dubbed the residence in La Palma a “miracle house”.

The volcano started erupting on Sunday. More than 200 homes have been destroyed and about 6,000 people evacuated.
