Russia’s response to US sanctions includes actions against the American diplomatic mission in Russia as well as US officials, as American diplomats will be expelled from the country, with Moscow saying that both countries’ envoys should hold consultations with their superiors amid the current situation, thus also recommending that US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan return to Washington for this purpose.
Russia is launching the procedure to withdraw from an earlier agreement allowing diplomats of the two countries to travel outside the cities where they are based.
The list of eight people who have been banned from entering Russia includes six current Biden administration officials: FBI Director Christopher Wray, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons Michael Carvajal, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, and Director of the Domestic Policy Council Susan Rice. In addition to them, the Russian ministry added Trump’s former National Security Adviser.

Eight people have been killed and seven injured in a shooting at a FedEx facility in the US city of Indianapolis according to police report, describing a gunman who began shooting “randomly” almost immediately after exiting his car, apparently killing himself minutes before officers arrived, with the identities of the victims or the gunman still a secret.

This is the latest incident in a recent uptick of mass shootings across the US, as the attack began around 23:00 local time (03:00 GMT) on Thursday in Indianapolis, Indiana – the state capital and its largest city:

“We’ll never really know all the ins and outs of why this occurred, but we’ll try our best,” said police chief Randal Taylor.

“This suspect came to the facility and when he came there, he got out of his car and pretty quickly started some random shooting outside the facility,” he said.

These actions are part of a whole of government approach to combating drug trafficking and transnational organized crime globally and in Mexico.

Flores-Silva was charged in a federal indictment on August 13, 2020, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The indictment charges Flores-Silva with conspiracy to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine, and one kilogram or more of heroin for importation into the United States, as well as carrying, using and possessing a firearm in relation to a drug offense. In 2002, Flores Silva was indicted in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina for engaging in narcotics trafficking activity. He was later convicted and served a five-year sentence before being released and returning to Mexico. In 2016, Mexican authorities arrested Flores Silva after being accused of orchestrating an April 2015, ambush against Mexican police officers in Soyatlan, Jalisco. Flores Silva was later released from Mexican prison after fighting his charges in Mexican courts.

The former defense minister Christopher Pyne, who warned Taiwan was most likely the next flashpoint, and that the chances of a war in the Indo-Pacific region involving China are rising sharply, said in an address to the University of Adelaide graduating students “the strategic posture of the People’s Republic of China is not as benign as it was”, and is causing discomfort to the United States and its allies:

“The reality is that China is confident and capable and is not embarrassed to show it,” he warned last week.

Mr Pyne, who stepped down as defence minister in 2019, said the likelihood of a “kinetic war” in the Indo-Pacific was now much higher than when he first served as minister for defense industry:

“Five years ago, I would’ve said that the possibility was very unlikely, now I would have to say that the possibility is more likely than it was then,” he said.

“Not a cyber war, but a real one involving loss of life, destruction of military platforms, with aggressors and defenders on different sides.

“This isn’t rhetoric, this is something that you and I may well have to confront in the next 5 to 10 years”

Taiwan’s Foreign Minister says the island will defend itself “to the very last day” if attacked by China.

Joseph Wu’s comments came as the Taiwanese minister in charge of the Coast Guard warned China its drones could be shot down if they strayed too close to Taiwanese territory.

The democratic self-governed island has complained of repeated military activities by Beijing in recent months, with China’s air force making almost daily sorties into Taiwan’s air defence identification zone.

On Monday, China said an aircraft carrier group was exercising close to the island.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said 15 Chinese aircraft including 12 fighters entered its air defence identification zone, with an anti-submarine aircraft flying to the south through the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines.

Taiwan’s air force sent up aircraft to intercept and warn the Chinese away, the ministry added.

Speaking earlier in the day, Mr Wu said the United States was concerned about the risk of conflict.

“From my limited understanding of American decision-makers watching developments in this region, they clearly see the danger of the possibility of China launching an attack against Taiwan,” he told reporters.

The US Air Force has invested in half a dozen advanced daytime ground-based telescopes it intends to use for tracking satellites in orbit.

Todd Brost, director of special projects at space-oriented defense firm Numerica, told SpaceNews on Monday the company had received a contract from the USAF to build six autonomous telescopes in Colorado, Australia, and Spain. The value of the contract is unknown, but the Pentagon gave Numerica $3 million in 2019 to develop the technology necessary for the project.

In August, Numerica announced it had received a patent for the daytime tracking satellite design, which it says can track satellites up to 22,000 miles up, which is the distance at which geosynchronous satellites orbit the Earth.

“Our technology is enabled by high-speed shortwave infrared cameras, customized optics and advanced algorithms,” Jeff Shaddix, principle investigator for daytime tracking at Numerica, said in the August release. “A daytime sky background creates an extreme shot noise environment. We collect 15 GB/minute from our cameras and apply image processing algorithms that fuse the data to reduce the noise to near theoretical limits. This enables detection of dim satellite signals beyond what is typically achievable for standard optical systems.”

Panamanian high school Jewish history teacher Stephanie Manopla coordinates a yearlong Holocaust education course at her school. It culminates with around 60 of her older students traveling to Poland for the March of the Living (MOTL), an annual 3-kilometer walk from Auschwitz to Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination camps.

Manopla, whose relatives left Poland, Romania, and Germany during the Nazi-era, has not yet been able to participate in person. But this year, she will join the march on Thursday from her home in Panama.

For the second year running, the 2021 MOTL is taking place virtually due to COVID. The event, ongoing since 1988, always coincides with Yom HaShoah, Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day. It remembers Holocaust victims, including the six million murdered Jews, and honors the survivors with the aim of fighting indifference, racism, and injustice.

This year’s event also honors medical personnel — those who risked their lives to save persecuted individuals during the Holocaust and those delivering care on the frontlines of the current coronavirus pandemic.

Early Wednesday morning, an agent patrolling near the US’ southern border wall arrested six men who admitted to illegally entering the US, one of whom was later found to be a documented MS-13 gang member.

In a statement released by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the agency revealed that San Diego Sector (SDC) Border Patrol agents arrested six men: a 28-year-old gang member from El Salvador, three additional El Salvadorian nationals, one Mexican national and one Honduran national.

The agency further indicated that the individuals were spotted by a SDC agent who was patrolling the mountainous area near Forest Gate Road at around 12:45 a.m. local time. The statement noted that the six men were “near the border wall.”

After capture, the men were transported to a nearby Border Patrol station to be processed for removal from the US. “I’m proud of the great work by our agents arresting this gang member,” Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke said in the statement.

“Their hard work keeps our neighborhoods safe.”
