Maharashtra, the Indian state worst affected by the coronavirus, has announced sweeping new restrictions amid a wave of Covid-19 infections, and even though Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray stopped short of calling it a lockdown, but said for the next 15 days, only essential services would function, and gatherings of more than four and non-essential travel on public transport would be banned:

“The war has begun again,” the chief minister said at a press conference.

“Now is the time for action,” he added.

He also acknowledged the need for more oxygen, saying supplies would be sought through the military.

“A global analysis of the immune response induced by the Sputnik V vaccine, in which 288 individuals participated, indicates that 94% showed the presence of specific antibodies after receiving a single dose,” the government said, citing the study.
Notably, 61 participants were previously infected with COVID-19. According to the study, they had 4.6 times more antibodies after the Russian vaccine shot than the rest of the group.

        Recently released disturbing research reports shows that intimate partner homicides are common, with roughly 1 in 6 homicide victims are killed by an intimate partner. Research shows that abusers with a gun in the home are five times more likely to kill their partners than abusers who don’t have access to a firearm.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — U.S. District Judge Pedro A. Delgado-Hernández sentenced, April 7, a Puerto Rican man to 354 months in prison for a conspiracy to possess, with intent to distribute, heroin, crack cocaine, cocaine, marijuana, oxycodone and alprazolam; and the possession of firearms in the commission of a drug trafficking crime.

HSI special agents arrested Oscar Luis Mendoza-Flores, 26, of Cayey, in November 2015, during the execution of Operation Family Feud, an HSI operation launched to dismantle a criminal organization operating in the Luis Muñoz Marín and Brisas de Cayey public housing projects and the San Tomás and Canteras wards, all in the municipality of Cayey. The operation netted 31 criminal arrests.

The charging document alleged that beginning in 2008, the organization, of which Mendoza-Flores belonged, acted in different roles such as leaders, managers, enforcers, runners, drug processors, enforcers and lookouts in order to further the goals of the conspiracy.

The indictment also alleged that, as part the conspiracy, some of the defendants used social media to post pictures of co-conspirators in possession of firearms to threaten witnesses and promote their drug trafficking activities. The defendants would take pictures of themselves in possession of firearms and drugs with cellular phones and distributed them as a means of intimidation.

France is suspending all flights to and from Brazil to curb the spread of a new Covid-19 variant found in the South American country, according to Prime Minister Jean Castex, since experts say the Brazilian variant, known as P1, is particularly virulent and partly to blame for a sharp increase in the country’s coronavirus death toll in March.

“We have observed that the situation is worsening and that is why we have decided to suspend all flights between Brazil and France until further notice,” Castex told parliament.

The prime minister noted that travelers from Brazil already needed to test negative for Covid-19 before their departure and upon arrival in France, and also quarantine for 10 days. But the government has also been facing mounting calls from health experts for a flight suspension to further limit potential spread.

A month ago, Health Minister Olivier Véran said that around 6 percent of Covid-19 cases in France were from the more contagious variants first found in Brazil and South Africa.
