France, Germany, Spain and Italy have said they are awaiting an investigation by the EU’s regulator into reports of clots in a small number of recipients, while other EU members, including Poland and Belgium, are continuing its use, as the head European Medicines Agency (EMA) Mr. Emer Cooke said it was still “firmly convinced” of the benefits of the AstraZeneca drug pointed out that blood clots highlighted by some countries were relatively common in the general population:

“I want to stress at present there is no indication that vaccination has caused these conditions,” she said.

In a joint statement later on Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said the EMA’s comments were “encouraging”.

Meanwhile, experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) were also meeting on Tuesday but a spokesman stressed there was “no evidence” that the reported blood clots were linked to the vaccine.

“At 22:35 (2035 GMT) this evening the Israeli enemy carried out an aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights on some targets in the Damascus area,” Syrian state news agency SANA cited a military source as saying.

“Our air defences intercepted the attack and shot down most of” the missiles, it said, adding there were no casualties.

AFP reporters heard explosions above the capital, which official media said were the air defenses responding to the attack.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the air strikes had targeted two ammunition depots belonging to Iranian militias fighting on the side of the Damascus government just a few kilometers from the Damascus airport south of the capital.

“The HERO Corps represents a unique opportunity for America’s veterans to continue their life of service by contributing to HSI’s critical mission of protecting our nation’s children,” said HSI Cyber Crime Center Deputy Assistant Director Stephanie L. Hampton.
“The mission focused skillsets veterans bring from military service are particularly suited to HSI’s fight against child exploitation and are an invaluable asset for our agency.”

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) identified and rescued more than 1,000 child exploitation victims from predators involved in the production, distribution and possession of child pornography, with wounded, ill or injured veterans are being trained and hired as computer forensic analysts to assist HSI in those investigations through the HERO Corps Program.

The HERO, or Human Exploitation Rescue Operative corps is an annual initiative managed by the HSI Cyber Crimes Center in partnership with the Department of Defense (DOD) and the National Association to Protect Children (PROTECT). Wounded vets and transitioning service members can apply through April 9 for the HERO Corps Program internship for fiscal year 2021.

HERO interns work in support roles with HSI special agents to help rescue victims, prosecute predators and prevent crimes of child sexual exploitation. The paid federal program enlists veterans to train and work as computer forensic analysts on child exploitation investigations.

Delivery of DDG 118 represents the official transfer of the ship from the shipbuilder to the Navy, after prior to delivery, the ship successfully conducted a series of at-sea and pier-side trials to demonstrate its material and operational readiness. 

The future USS Daniel Inouye is named in honor of Daniel Inouye, who served as a United States Senator for Hawaii from 1963 until his death in 2012. He received the Medal of Honor June 21, 2000 for his extraordinary heroism in action while serving with the 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team in Italy during World War II.

“We’ve really got to be careful that we don’t claim victory and pull back on all the public health measures that we know work in keeping the lid on these surging of infections,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the US’ leading medical professionals on the novel coronavirus, recently urging the American public against declaring a victory against COVID-19 because the deadly disease remains a threat to the nation, referring to masking and social distancing measures promoted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  He highlighted that while the daily new case counts have bounced between 45,000 and 60,000, those figures are “still at a level that are really quite risky.”

Touching on the decrease from the “extraordinarily high” case numbers reported during the winter months, Fauci said that current figures are “much better than the few hundred thousand per day, but it’s still at an unacceptably high level.”

“Trafficking counterfeit merchandise hurts legitimate business and poses a significant public safety risk as the individuals prey on unsuspecting consumers who believe they are getting name-brand products at a reduced price,” said Timothy Tubbs, deputy special agent in charge of HSI Laredo.

“Together with our Laredo Trade Enforcement Coordination Center law enforcement partners, HSI will continue to engage in an unrelenting pursuit of individuals who attempt to profit from the illegal trafficking of counterfeit products”, that is how a joint effort by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Feb. 9 seized $14.7 million in counterfeit electronics devices, toys and furniture infringing on multiple CBP-registered trademarks at the World Trade Bridge.

The total manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) value, had the items been legitimate, was $14.7 million.

“The Kingpin Act is a critically important tool in the U.S. government’s unrelenting efforts to target foreign drug cartels that seek to flood American streets with illegal drugs,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Nicholas L. McQuaid of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.

“The Department of Justice will aggressively investigate and criminally prosecute those who willfully violate Treasury Department sanctions under the Kingpin Act, as a key component of our broader whole-of-government strategy to dismantle and disrupt foreign drug cartels.”

“Today’s guilty plea is a result of our relentless commitment to disrupt and dismantle all aspects of the CJNG organization,” said Special Agent in Charge Bill Bodner of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Los Angeles Field Division. 

“Our efforts will continue to include a focus on those who facilitate these illicit drug networks. Together with the Department of Justice, we will use all the investigative tools available, including OFAC designations, to bring to justice those who engage in illegal activity that is fueling the drug crisis nationwide.”   

A dual U.S.-Mexican citizen, identified as Jessica Johanna Oseguera Gonzalez, 34, of Guadalajara, Mexico,  pleaded guilty today to willfully engaging in financial dealings with Mexican companies that had been identified as Specially Designated Narcotics Traffickers by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

The German Health Ministry described the move to halt the use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine as a “precaution” on the basis of advice from the national health regulator, the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI), with Italy, France and Spain issuing the same decision soon after. According to the Health Ministry, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) will decide “whether and how the new information will affect the authorization of the vaccine” pending an investigation.

“The most important thing for confidence is transparency,” Spahn said during a briefing.

RKI epidemiologist Dirk Brockmann told German broadcaster ARD that the loosening of measures was particularly unhelpful given the exponential growth that has occurred with the British virus variant B117:

“We are exactly on the flank of the third wave. That can no longer be disputed. And, at this point, we have eased the restrictions and that is speeding up the exponential growth,” he told German broadcaster ARD.

“It has been totally been irrational to loosen up here. It’s just fueling this exponential growth.”

German intensive care doctors warned that some measures should be put back in place to avoid another resurgence:

“From the data we currently have and with the spread of the British mutation, we would argue strongly to return immediately into a lockdown to avoid a strong third wave,” Christian Karagiannidis, director of Germany’s intensive care register, told broadcaster RBB.

The RKI on Tuesday reported 5,480 new cases over 24 hours, bringing the total to 2,581,329.

The number of deaths rose by 238, to 73,656.
