A New York man, identified as Christian Johnson, 23, of Buffalo, was charged in a criminal complaint filed in the Western District of New York with wire fraud, bank fraud, and false statements to a financial institution, and unsealed today for his alleged participation in a scheme to defraud multiple financial institutions by filing bank loan applications that fraudulently sought forgivable Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration (SBA) under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

The complaint alleges that Johnson submitted multiple fraudulent PPP loan applications on behalf of a company called Million Man LLC (Million Man) to at least three financial institutions. The complaint alleges that these applications contained numerous false and misleading statements about Million Man’s business and operations, including the number of employees and average monthly payroll. The complaint further alleges that in support of the fraudulent loan applications, Johnson submitted falsified federal tax documents payroll records.

Days after the UN raised alarm over wide inequities in the initial rollout of vaccines between rich and poor countries, G7 leaders holding a virtual meeting agreed to increase financial commitments to global vaccination efforts, as the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) economic powers, who control a little under half of the world’s economy, agreed to “intensify cooperation” in response to the coronavirus pandemic and increase funding commitments for the rollout of vaccines in the world’s poorest countries to $7.5 billion:

“Today, with increased financial commitments of over $4 billion to ACT-A and COVAX, collective G7 support totals $7.5 billion,” the elite club comprising Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the US said in a joint statement.

But many leaders, under pressure over their vaccination campaigns at home, were unwilling to say exactly how much vaccine they were willing to share with the developing world, or when.

With boil water advisories affecting nearly half the state, Texas’ water supply has also dropped amid damage to systems from the historic cold snap, news is coming in that power is returning following the major winter storm, but over 13 million Texans are still facing blatant shortage of clean water, that had led to at least 24 deaths, and officials expect that number to rise, with few other southern states hit by snow and ice storms this week have also reported water service outages.

Winter weather has also shut off water in the city of Jackson, Mississippi – home to around 150,000 people – as well as the largest county in Tennessee that includes the city of Memphis, with over 651,000 residents.

The Taiwanese Defense Ministry reported that four Chinese J-16s, and four JH-7s and an electronic warfare aircraft were seen flying in the South China Sea near the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands, forcing his country to engage the approaching air force in response, by issuing “radio warnings” and deploying their air defense missile systems to “monitor the activity”.

Coronavirus cases are rising rapidly in the German border town of Flensburg, with half linked to the British mutation, raising concern that tighter restrictions are imminent, and it is spreading through town at high speed.
