Nearly 40,000 residents were without power, as an ice storm in Texas caused by a polar vortex cycling southward from Canada, swept across the region, a nasty winter storm dropping freezing rain and snow to a wide part of the US, all the way to the mid-Atlantic, resulting in hazardous travel conditions, fatal car accidents, extensive tree damage and widespread power outages, with bad weather conditions expected to continue through next week, as tens of thousands in Kentucky and West Virginia have lost power as well. The storm, kindly named “Shirley” by The Weather Channel, led to several fatal multi-car pileups in Ft. Worth and Austin, Texas, Thursday morning, weather.com reported, killing at least six people in car accidents.
“The scene we saw today is really one unlike probably any of us have ever seen and we pray to god we never see again,” Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes said in a press conference late Thursday afternoon, weather.com reported.

The UK contraction in 2020 “was more than twice as much as the previous largest annual fall on record”, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said, the amount being nearly 10%, as COVID19 limited nations output, yet it appears that the economy is about to avoid a double-dip recession after growth picked up at the end of the year, after dropping to nearly to 1% before Christmas, after losing 2.3% in November, as some restrictions eased.
Hospitality, car sales and hairdressers recovered some lost ground, the ONS said, with the GDP drop is “comparable to other countries.”
ONS deputy national statistician Jonathan Athow said:
“An increase in Covid-19 testing and tracing also boosted output. The economy continued to grow in the fourth quarter as a whole, despite the additional [lockdown] restrictions in November.”
