Prominent German Jewish figures have warned of the danger of conspiracy theories and rising anti-Semitism during the Bundestag’s annual Holocaust memorial service, as the Remembrance Day service marks 76 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp, with the German Bundestag commemorated the end of the Holocaust with a ceremony in the Reichstag building and online on Wednesday, and the commemoration also celebrates 1,700 years of Jewish life in Germany.
The former head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Holocaust survivor, Charlotte Knobloch, and publicist Marina Weisband were guest speakers during the ceremony, attended by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Angela Merkel as well as other lawmakers.
The annual Bundestag memorial service was launched in 1996 by the then-president, Roman Herzog. The date January 27 was chosen to commemorate the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland by the Soviet Red Army in 1945.

US President Joe Biden has signed a series of executive orders designed to address climate change, including a new ban on some energy drilling, with the orders intended to freeze new oil and gas leases on public lands and double offshore wind-produced energy by 2030, and expected to meet stiff resistance from the energy industry and come as a sea change from Donald Trump, who cut environmental protections:
“Today is climate day at the White House. We have already waited too long,” Mr Biden told reporters at the White House.

“And we can’t wait any longer,” Mr. Biden saying the US “must lead” a global response to the climate change crisis.
“Just like we need a unified national response to Covid-19, we desperately need a unified national response to the climate crisis because there is a climate crisis,” he said.
He added that neither challenge could be met by the US alone, aiming to conserve at least 30% of federal lands and oceans by 2030.

A leading British scientist has warned that a pandemic of “Disease X” is around the corner, noting that it is not a matter of if, but when the world will face another daunting challenge, as Dr. Mark Woolhouse, professor of infectious disease epidemiology at the Usher Institute at the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, University of Edinburgh, said he and his colleagues in 2017 approached the World Health Organization, asking the agency to place something called Disease X on its list of priorities:

“We thought that the next emerging pandemic might be a virus that we don’t even know about yet – quite frankly we thought it was the most likely scenario”, Mr. Woolhouse said.

At a meeting with WHO officials a year later, Woolhouse and his colleagues thought about what Disease X could wind up being. One of their hypotheses suggested that it would be a novel coronavirus related to MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) or SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).

Asked whether the next Disease X could potentially be around the corner, the scientist responded “absolutely”. Woolhouse noted, however, that the mechanism by which the disease will break out is always unpredictable.
