Article 10 of the German constitution guarantees the fundamental right to protection of telecommunications privacy, which can only be limited in grave exceptions to protect the country against armed attack and acts of terrorism as well as cyberattacks, cross-border crime such as the narcotics trade, money laundering and people trafficking.

More and more public figures in Germany have been calling for a much stricter lockdown, proposing that more people work from home and temporary factory shutdowns, which had raised fears of impending economic disaster, when the economy is dealt a heavy blow as stores and factories have to close, a discomfort amplified by Federal Statistics Office report announcing that the economy contracted by 5% last year when the coronavirus pandemic took its course.

That’s less than the 5.7% drop logged back in 2009 at the height of the global financial crisis, and in fact much less than the economic prophets predicted in spring in face of the first lockdown in the country.

Policymakers here appear helpless as they struggle to come up with an efficient strategy to fight the pandemic, while missing the opportunity in summer to develop such a strategy, and instead  wrangled over who’s responsible for what continued between the federal government and top representatives from Germany’s 16 states.

Maybe the current restrictions will have to continue until the Easter holidays as we wait for a slot to get vaccinated. But forcing people into working from home and halting production on factory floors are no reasonable measures as it would add economic disaster to a crisis that we can get on top of with the help of an efficient vaccination campaign and yet-to-be-approved medication.

During a TV interview, Dr. Anthony Fauci said it was “not too late” for those yet to travel to help curb the virus by wearing masks and socially distancing during the thanksgiving, the holyday typically heralding the busiest week for travel in the US, after the country recorded 13 million coronavirus cases, and more than 266,000 people have died.

As of Sunday, the number of Covid-19 cases recorded in November has surpassed four million, double the figure recorded in October, and last year, an estimated 26 million people passed through US airports in the week surrounding the holiday:

“There is almost certainly going to be an uptick because of what has happened with the travel,” said Dr. Fauci, recommending thanksgiving travelers quarantine for a period of time “if it’s possible”.

Dr. Deborah Birx, White House coronavirus response coordinator, echoed Dr. Fauci’s concerns, telling CBS News that people who had travelled for the holiday should avoid seeing relatives over the age of 65.

“Now we’re entering this post-Thanksgiving surge with three, four and 10 times as much disease across the country,” she said.

“We are deeply worried”, she concluded.

If passed by Congress, it would include $1tn for households, with direct payments of $1,400 to all Americans.

The relief proposal includes $415bn to fight the virus and $440bn for small businesses.

Mr. Biden, a Democrat, has promised to beat the pandemic that has killed more than 385,000 people in the US.

He campaigned last year vowing to do a better job handling the virus than outgoing President Donald Trump, a Republican.

In a primetime speech on Thursday night from his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, he said: “A crisis of deep human suffering is in plain sight and there’s no time to waste.”

“The very health of our nation is at stake,” he added. “We have to act and we have to act now.”

The incoming president said: “There will be stumbles, but I will always be honest with you about both the progress we’re making and what setbacks we meet.”

Mr. Biden wants to pump $20bn into vaccinating Americans, including setting up mass vaccination hubs and dispatching mobile units to remote areas.

Two effective vaccines were delivered under the Trump administration, but health officials say the rollout needs to speed up.

“The vaccine rollout in the United States has been a dismal failure thus far,” said Mr Biden. His administration aims to deliver 100 million jabs in 100 days.

So far, about 11 million doses of the vaccine have been administered in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

His plan also calls for $50bn to expand testing and $130bn to help most schools reopen by the spring.

The plan would fund the hiring of 100,000 public health workers for contact tracing.

ATLANTA — An unlawfully present Salvadoran national, identified as Eulalio Alvarez-Lizama, 36, a known or suspected member of the transnational criminal street organization known as Mara Salvatrucha or “MS-13”, wanted by law enforcement authorities in El Salvador on gang participation charges, was arrested by officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Jan. 4.

Alvarez illegally entered the U.S. on an unknown date and was first encountered by ERO on Feb. 12, 2012, at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office in Charlotte after his arrest for operating a vehicle without a license. ICE officers served him with a notice to appear and placed him into removal proceedings before a federal immigration judge. In July 2019, ERO Atlanta received an INTERPOL Red Notice indicating that Alvarez was wanted in El Salvador for participation in gang activities.

President Trump issued a statement on through the White House press secretary’s office that called for “no violence” amid reports that demonstrations were being planned ahead of Inauguration Day:

“I urge that there must be no violence, no lawbreaking and no vandalism of any kind,” reads the statement.

“That is not what I stand for, and it is not what America stands for. I call on all Americans to help ease tensions and calm tempers. Thank you.”

Rowdy demonstrations noted by him were highlighted earlier this week in an FBI memo that warned multiple armed protests were expected to take place across the US at all 50 state capitols, including the US Capitol. The memo stated that a “storming” was being planned at state, local and federal courthouses should Trump be removed from the Oval Office before Inauguration Day.

Additionally, federal authorities revealed that an “identified armed group” planned to travel to Washington, DC, on January 16 if congressional lawmakers proceeded with measures to invoke the 25th Amendment.

“A huge uprising will occur,” warned the agency, which also explained in the bulletin that “armed protests” could be organized through “at least” Inauguration Day.
