The ship is carrying twice the fighters on board, testing the American military’s theory that Wasp-class ships can serve as small aircraft carriers amid plans to reduce the number of large carriers in the US fleet.

Beijing has not filed a complaint on the ship’s passage, although it regularly does so when US Navy vessels sail through the disputed waters of the South China Sea.

Asked in an interview with Fox and Friends Weekend about calls for the release of the full confidential report, Mr Trump said: “It’s really up to the Attorney-General, whatever he wants to do.”
