The people who run American elections have a special prayer, according to Professor Nate Persily, Co-Director of the Stanford-MIT Healthy Elections Project.
“Oh God, whatever happens, please don’t let it be close,” he said.
Persily said we’ll know one thing for sure a couple of hours after polls close on election day (most are closed by 1:00pm AEDT).
“We will know which world we live in. Do we live in a world where there’s a clear victor or is it one where there’s going to be a lot of contestation over absentee ballots?”

WASHINGTON – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced Wednesday preliminary results from Operation OPTical Illusion, a law enforcement operation targeting nonimmigrant students who fraudulently used the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program to remain in the United States. OPT enables nonimmigrant students to work in the United States in positions related to their field of study for up to one year, with an additional 24 months if the student participates in STEM optional practical training.
The operation, which is ongoing, resulted in the arrest of 15 nonimmigrant students who claimed to be employed by companies that don’t exist.
“Today’s announcement is just another example of the Trump Administration not only putting America first but making sure the laws of our immigration system are enforced,” said Acting Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli.

BRASILIA, Brazil – Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Brazil assists Brazil Federal Police in the capture of a dual Egyptian-Lebanese national for the smuggling of nine Yemenis nationals. The Brazil Federal Police received an anonymous tip on the whereabouts of Hussein Mohamed Sobbih Fatouh and a group of nine Yemeni nationals in the city of Assis Brazil, Acre, on Oct. 11, 2020. ICE HSI verified the identities and previous travel routes of the Yemenis nationals whom, except for one, were previously encountered and enrolled in the ICE Biometric Identification Transnational Migration Alert Program (BITMAP) in Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
“The arrest of Sobbih Fatouh is a major victory,” said ICE Attaché for Brazil and Bolivia Robert Fuentes.
“Not only was the human smuggler apprehended, but we were able to identify nine special interest aliens who are a potential threat to our national security. We are grateful to our Brazilian partners for their strong partnership in combating transnational criminal organizations. ICE HSI is committed to disrupting human smuggling networks who undermine our immigration system and put countless individuals at risk while doing so.”
HSI Brazil collaborative investigative efforts with Brazil Federal Police revealed that Sobbih Fatouh, a resident of Brazil, has traveled frequently between Brazil and Peru and is part of a larger Special Interest Alien (SIA) Human Smuggling Organization that operates in Brazil and beyond. Brazil Federal Police and HSI Brazil will continue to investigate and exhaust all leads in furtherance of the binational criminal investigation.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement Removal Operations (ERO) officers completed an immigration enforcement activity, which resulted in the arrest of 54 immigration violators throughout the New York City Metropolitan Area, and the neighboring counties of Nassau, Suffolk, Dutchess, Ulster and Westchester.
The nationwide, weeklong immigration enforcement activity, which concluded Oct. 9, focused on targeting and arresting individuals in sanctuary cities.
“ICE continues to protect communities by taking criminal aliens off the streets regardless of any locality’s cooperation policies – which is part of our congressionally mandated mission,” said ICE Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Director Tony H. Pham. “Officers and agents of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are sworn federal law enforcement officers who enforce U.S. immigration laws created by Congress to keep this country safe.”
Individuals arrested in New York were citizens and nationals from the following countries: China, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Grenada, Guyana, Honduras, Ireland, Jamaica, Mexico, Moldova, Mozambique, Pakistan, Panama, Peru and St. Lucia.
The New York arrests included charges filed for assault, sexual assault against a child, lewd and lascivious acts upon a child, rape and criminal possession of a loaded firearm. Other charges include criminal possession of stolen property, driving while intoxicated, robbery and grand larceny.
“Let us not gloss over the fact that the vast majority of the individuals arrested during this operation have criminal histories. It’s frightening that New York City politicians created laws that force local law enforcement agencies to release dangerous criminals back into the community despite the seriousness of their crimes,” said Thomas R. Decker, ICE ERO New York field office director.
Of the more than 50 individuals ERO officers arrested, more than 30 were released from local law enforcement custody with active ICE detainers; eight had outstanding removal orders; eight were previously removed or deported; five were criminally prosecuted; two were active gang members, and one was a foreign fugitive. All but two of the individuals arrested had criminal histories in the U.S.
All individuals arrested during the immigration enforcement activity will remain in ICE custody pending the outcome of their removal proceedings before an immigration judge.
ICE officially announced the results of the enforcement activity on Oct. 16, but one Manhattan resident’s arrest garnered considerable media coverage in New York prior to the announcement.
On Oct. 8, during an at-large arrest in Manhattan, ICE took custody of 48-year-old Fernando Santos-Martinez, an unlawfully present Mexican national who was removed from the U.S. on three separate occasions in 2003.
Despite a detainer lodged by ICE, the New York Police Department released Santos-Martinez from custody following his Sept. 11 arrest for assault, attempted assault, attempted gang assault, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment. His local charges are currently pending.
Following Santos-Martinez’s arrest, news organizations falsely reported claims of ICE officers misidentifying themselves as NYPD – an accusation that ICE leadership vehemently deny.
“NYPD should have been empowered to turn Santos-Martinez over to ICE officers in a controlled environment back in September,” said Decker. “His arrest was inevitable, but had local politicians and media organizations abstained from promoting false accusations, the confusion could have been avoided. ERO officers are brave and honest professionals. They work tirelessly to gather information and conduct investigations to remove dangerous criminals from our communities. Before denigrating ICE officers, I encourage city officials to consider the repercussions of their sanctuary city policies.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced Monday that 12 criminal aliens were arrested in as part of a targeted enforcement operation by its Fugitive Operations Teams in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, from Sept. 21 to 25. Six of these arrests included criminals with active ICE detainers who instead of being transferred into federal custody were released back into the community where they were free to reoffend until their capture.
ICE has repeatedly asked local jurisdictions to reconsider non-cooperation policies enacted in recent years because those policies put politics before public safety and release criminals back into communities where they are free to reoffend.
ICE maintains that cooperation with local law enforcement is essential to protecting public safety, and the agency aims to work cooperatively with local jurisdictions to ensure that criminal aliens are not released into U.S. communities to commit additional crimes. Unfortunately, Mecklenburg County and others continue to not only refuse to honor ICE detainers but to even notify ICE when it is releasing a potential public safety threat back into the community.
“We are here because we cannot stand by idly while knowing the public is being misled about the role ICE plays in keeping the public safe,” said ICE Executive Associate Director Henry Lucero. “The fact is local policies prohibiting agencies from working with ICE put you in danger and waste police resources. The public should hold its leaders accountable and demand to know what type of criminals are being released from local custody instead of turned over to ICE.”

The indictment, unsealed today, alleges that Pan perpetrated a scheme to submit fraudulent PPP loan applications to federally insured banks. The Small Business Administration (SBA) guarantees PPP loans under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. According to the allegations, Pan submitted numerous fraudulent PPP loan applications, including on behalf of entities named Pan Insurance Agency, White Walker, Khaleesi, and The Night’s Watch. The indictment alleges that, in support of the fraudulent PPP loan applications, Pan made false statements about the companies’ employees and payroll expenses. The PPP loan applications were supported by fake documents, including falsified tax filings, according to the indictment. Pan allegedly submitted fourteen PPP loan applications seeking over $6.1 million and received more than $1.7 million in benefits following approval of the Pan Insurance Agency and White Walker PPP loan applications. The government was able to seize some of the allegedly fraudulent loan benefits.
The CARES Act is a federal law enacted March 29. It is designed to provide emergency financial assistance to millions of Americans who are suffering the economic effects resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. One source of relief the CARES Act provides is the authorization of up to $349 billion in forgivable loans to small businesses for job retention and certain other expenses through the PPP. In April 2020, Congress authorized over $300 billion in additional PPP funding.
The PPP allows qualifying small businesses and other organizations to receive loans with a maturity of two years and an interest rate of one percent. Businesses must use PPP loan proceeds for payroll costs, interest on mortgages, rent and utilities. The PPP allows the interest and principal to be forgiven if businesses spend the proceeds on these expenses within a set time period and use at least a certain percentage of the loan towards payroll expenses.
A criminal indictment is merely an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The Donald Trump and Joe Biden campaigns have confirmed the candidates will appear at round two of the presidential election debates as the independent body responsible said it would look to change the format.
It comes as Wednesday’s fierce debate was labelled “the worst presidential debate ever”, filled with personal attacks and interjections.
Criticism and calls for change started rolling in before the first debate even ended, with the suggestion of a “mute button” gaining traction on social media.
Here’s what we know about potential changes, and what’s coming up for debate number two.
The Commission on Presidential Debates released a statement on Wednesday, saying the events are for the benefit of Americans.
“Last night’s debate made clear that additional structure should be added to the format of the remaining debates to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues,” the statement read.
“The CPD will be carefully considering the changes that it will adopt and will announce those measures shortly.
“The Commission is grateful to Chris Wallace for the professionalism and skill he brought to last night’s debate and intends to ensure that additional tools to maintain order are in place for the remaining debates.”
The CPD hasn’t specified yet what the changes will be.
The 90-minute debate on Tuesday night has been described as chaotic and with constant interruptions and candidates straying away from the questions asked.
Biden suggested the use of a mute button while speaking at a campaign stop on Wednesday, saying he hoped organisers of future debates would be able to turn off the microphone of the candidate who is not speaking.
“It was a national embarrassment,” Biden said of the debate and Trump’s performance.
“I am not going to speculate what happens at the second or third debate.”
The mute button idea quickly gained traction on social media during and after the event.
