Twenty years since its launch, the world aviation market decided the A380 was more of a fad, leading Airbus to announce that it would cease production of the jetliner by 2021, a deep disappointment after the jumbo jet made its maiden flight in 2005, with the EU company promising airborne lounges, more efficient, whisper quiet engines, and an double-decker fuselage that was expected to be the killer of Boeing’s 747 jumbo jet.
In a press statement announcing the decision, Airbus chief executive Tom Enders said there was no substantial A380 order backlog to sustain its ongoing production.
