Mexico overtook France as the fifth-highest in the world, with the World Health Organization reporting the highest daily increase in global coronavirus infections since the start of the pandemic, with more than 252,165 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, and 30,366 people have died from coronavirus in the US southernly neighbor.

At the same time, and supposedly in a happier place to be, pubs in England have reopened after being closed for three months, prompting fears of excessive partying, while a not very bright Kansas newspaper’s post equated mask mandate with Holocaust.

Mexico has reported 523 more coronavirus deaths, as Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez Gatell said the actual number of infected was probably significantly higher:

“We knew from the beginning that the cases we report here do not represent the total number of people with COVID-19 in Mexico, [so] neither Mexico nor any other country in the world aims to make an exhaustive count”.

US President Trump denounced angry mobs who are trying to tear down statues of our founders, in a speech marking 4 July celebrations at Mount Rushmore, South Dakota.

The location was controversial, as the monument features the faces of two slave-owning former US presidents, and stands on land taken from the indigenous Lakota Sioux by the US government in the 1800s. Thousands of Trump supporters gathered despite concerns over the possible spread of coronavirus.(BBC)

A group of protesters toppled a statue of Christopher Columbus and tossed it into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor on Saturday night, the same day that President Trump vowed to protect the “American way of life” that begun when Columbus discovered America, as demonstrators used ropes to pull down the monument, located near the city’s Little Italy neighborhood. Toppling the Columbus statue was part of the “re-examination taking place nationally and globally around some of these monuments and statues that may represent different things to different people”, according to spokesman for Democratic Mayor Bernard Young. A wave of protests began in the US after the police killing of Black man George Floyd on May 25, calling for the removal of many controversial statues, including those of Columbus, Confederate figures and others who they say are responsible for centuries of oppression.

Saturday’s protest is the latest incident involving Columbus statues, which have also been targeted in other US cities, including Richmond, Miami, St. Paul and Boston.

 The Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park has been a focus of racial controversy due to its Confederate symbolism, and a gathering spot for the Ku Klux Klan, also famous for a rock relief of three Confederate figures – Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson.

So not surprisingly, a group of heavily armed black militia selected the place to call upon white supremacists to show up and have a talk, as one of the men used a loudspeaker to call out right-wing groups:

“I don’t see no white militia, so to the Boogie Boys, the Three Percenters and all the rest of you scared-*ss rednecks: we’re here… We’re in your house. Let’s go. NFAC!”  the man was filmed saying. The abbreviation apparently refers to the organizers of the march and stands for Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson.
