It has been known for a long time that the Islamic Merkeldom of Germany’s foreign intelligence agency (BND) screens hundreds of millions of emails annually, walking in the big, black boots of Uncle Heinrich Himmler, hence is no surprise that the European Court of Human Rights is now looking into this practice, a view shared by country’s data protection activists who are fearful of the BND’s trawling of content online since the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has admitted a Reporters Without Borders (RSF) complaint claiming that people are not properly protected against groundless and unjustified mass surveillance by Germany’s foreign intelligence service, the BND.

Article 10 of the German constitution guarantees the fundamental right to protection of telecommunications privacy, which can only be limited in grave exceptions to protect the country against armed attack and acts of terrorism as well as cyberattacks, cross-border crime such as the narcotics trade, money laundering and people trafficking.

More and more public figures in Germany have been calling for a much stricter lockdown, proposing that more people work from home and temporary factory shutdowns, which had raised fears of impending economic disaster, when the economy is dealt a heavy blow as stores and factories have to close, a discomfort amplified by Federal Statistics Office report announcing that the economy contracted by 5% last year when the coronavirus pandemic took its course.

That’s less than the 5.7% drop logged back in 2009 at the height of the global financial crisis, and in fact much less than the economic prophets predicted in spring in face of the first lockdown in the country.

Policymakers here appear helpless as they struggle to come up with an efficient strategy to fight the pandemic, while missing the opportunity in summer to develop such a strategy, and instead  wrangled over who’s responsible for what continued between the federal government and top representatives from Germany’s 16 states.

Maybe the current restrictions will have to continue until the Easter holidays as we wait for a slot to get vaccinated. But forcing people into working from home and halting production on factory floors are no reasonable measures as it would add economic disaster to a crisis that we can get on top of with the help of an efficient vaccination campaign and yet-to-be-approved medication.

During a TV interview, Dr. Anthony Fauci said it was “not too late” for those yet to travel to help curb the virus by wearing masks and socially distancing during the thanksgiving, the holyday typically heralding the busiest week for travel in the US, after the country recorded 13 million coronavirus cases, and more than 266,000 people have died.

As of Sunday, the number of Covid-19 cases recorded in November has surpassed four million, double the figure recorded in October, and last year, an estimated 26 million people passed through US airports in the week surrounding the holiday:

“There is almost certainly going to be an uptick because of what has happened with the travel,” said Dr. Fauci, recommending thanksgiving travelers quarantine for a period of time “if it’s possible”.

Dr. Deborah Birx, White House coronavirus response coordinator, echoed Dr. Fauci’s concerns, telling CBS News that people who had travelled for the holiday should avoid seeing relatives over the age of 65.

“Now we’re entering this post-Thanksgiving surge with three, four and 10 times as much disease across the country,” she said.

“We are deeply worried”, she concluded.

Democratic President-Elect Joe Biden promised that under his administration, not “another foot” of the wall, one of Trump’s pet projects and electoral promises, will be built, basically making sure that his intent to ditch his predecessor’s plans to build a border wall on the US southern border could cost the country’s taxpayers “billions of dollars”. 

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) chief Mark Morgan has warned that a little over half of the planned 800 miles of the wall has already been constructed, and that contracts for the construction of the remaining 350 miles have already been signed, hence not only would the government have to pay settlement fees to the contractors under the contracts’ provisions, but would also have to spend more money to stop the construction of the sections that will have already been started by 20 January:

“We’re going to walk away from areas of the wall that have already been constructed. There are going to be some areas where, let’s say we’ve already started to dig a trench and put some rebar in there, we’re actually going to have to stop and pay extra to have them remove the rebar and fill in the trench”, Morgan said.
