They have been blamed for attacks on several hives of honeybees in which entire colonies were wiped out.

The hornet feeds primarily on other insects, such as caterpillars, as well as tree sap and honey.  Commercial beekeepers have expressed concern for the well-being of their hives should Vespa mandarinia become established in North America.

PHOENIX — A local area man, identified as James Theodore Polzin, 47, of Mesa, was charged by criminal complaint for fraudulently seeking over $450,000 in COVID-19 relief guaranteed by the Small Business Administration (SBA) through the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) and the FBI are investigating this case, after he was ordered detained at a hearing in U.S. District Court, District of Arizona. He is charged with three counts of fraud in connection with major disaster or emergency benefits and three counts of wire fraud. The complaint alleges that between May 2020 through at least July 2020, Polzin provided false loan applications claiming nonexistent employees and revenues for businesses he supposedly owned and operated.

“The defendants deceived the U.S. Navy by willfully failing to satisfy the company’s obligations under $120 million in contracts with the Department of Defense that were designed, among other things, to ensure the company not only delivered the required services to the Navy, but also complied with critical environmental safeguards,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Nicholas L. McQuaid for the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.
