The Pentagon has laid out a plan to modernize US nuclear arsenal by developing new, mini yield, low radiation nukes, in response to the threat from Russia.
Nine countries are known to hold more than 9,000 nuclear weapons that are currently in military service, deployed – mounted on land or sea missiles and kept at air bases – or in storage. About 1800 are on high alert and could be fired with little warning. Including retired warheads waiting to be dismantled, the total is said to be almost 15,000, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri). This is a sharp decline since the 1980s high when the figure peaked at around 70,000.

The US Congress has released a memo accusing the FBI of abusing its power in its investigations into Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, alleging the FBI used unsubstantiated evidence “spy file” to spy on a Trump aide.
The FISA court-approved wiretapping of Carter Page, a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign who was put under electronic surveillance by the FBI, is believed to be in the center of controversial report to obtain the October 2016 warrant that gave permission to spy on Mr Page.
It says that they did not tell the authorities their claim to the warrant was partially based on a dossier funded in part by the rival Hillary Clinton campaign.
The report says that all this represents “a troubling breakdown of legal processes established to protect the American people from abuses.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met all delegates to the third Party congress of the armed police force in Beijing.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), expressed congratulations on the convening of the congress and extended greetings to the delegates and all officers and servicemen of the armed police force.
