Marine General Joseph Dunford said he wanted to “ensure freedom of navigation” in the region, which provides essential trade routes, in order to to safeguard waters around Iran and Yemen, a dangerous place where last month the US blamed Iranian-backed fighters for attacks on two tankers.

The US would provide “command and control” ships, he said, but the aim would be for other countries to offer boats to establish patrol between those ships, and the size of the coalition depended on the number of countries which decided to take part.

The Straits of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab are essential strategic marine locations, providing access from the ocean into the Gulf and the Red Sea, and Gen. Dunford said the US would “work directly with the militaries to identify the specific capabilities” each country has to support the initiative.

State Department employee Candace Claiborne, who  provided Chinese intelligence agents confidential documents on topics ranging from economics to diplomatic visits, got more than three years in prison for allegedly conspiring with Chinese intelligence agents, the Justice Department announced.

“Candace Marie Claiborne, a former employee of the US Department of State, was sentenced today to 40 months in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $40,000 for conspiracy to defraud the United States, by lying to law enforcement and background investigators, and hiding her extensive contacts with, and gifts from, agents of the People’s Republic of China, in exchange for providing them with internal documents from the US State Department,” the release said.

According to plea documents, Claiborne provided Chinese intelligence agents confidential documents on topics ranging from economics to diplomatic visits, in return of thousands of dollars in gifts and benefits over the course of five years.

Three members of notorious international cybercrime group, identified as Ukrainian nationals Dmytro Fedorov, 44, Fedir Hladyr, 33, and Andrii Kolpakov, 30, all members of a prolific hacking group widely known as FIN7 (also referred to as the Car bank Group and the Navigator Group, among other names), that since at least 2015 has engaged in a highly sophisticated malware campaign targeting more than 100 U.S. companies, predominantly in the restaurant, gaming, and hospitality industries.

As outlined in indictments, FIN7 hacked into thousands of computer systems and stole millions of customer credit and debit card numbers, which the group used or sold for profit.

“The three Ukrainian nationals indicted today allegedly were part of a prolific hacking group that targeted American companies and citizens by stealing valuable consumer data, including personal credit card information, that they then sold on the Darknet,” said Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski. “Because hackers are committed to finding new ways to harm the American public and our economy, the Department of Justice remains steadfast in its commitment to working with our law enforcement partners to identify, interdict, and prosecute those responsible for these threats.”
