A Sudanese court has sentenced 29 intelligence officers to death for the torture and killing of the teacher Ahmad al-Khair, 36, who died in custody in February following his arrest for taking part in protests against then President Omar al-Bashir’s government.

These are the first sentences handed down over the crackdown on pro-democracy activists in the months before Bashir was toppled in April, with the prosecution saying the death sentences were a just punishment.

After the sentencing, the judge asked al-Khair’s brother, Sa’d, whether he wanted the 29 men to be pardoned – but he said he wanted them to be executed instead.

The court found that Ahmad Al-Khair was beaten and tortured to death by the officers at a detention.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said Monday it had detained two Russian nationals for plotting terrorist attacks during the New Year holidays in Russia’s second largest city, St. Petersburg, following a tip from U.S. law enforcement partners.

“Evidence confirming their preparations for terrorist attacks was seized from the detainees. They have confessed,” it said, after Russian President Vladimir Putin called President  Trump to thank him “for the information transmitted through the channels of U.S. special services that has helped thwart terrorist acts in Russia,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

The two presidents agreed to continue bilateral cooperation in combating terrorism, it said.

Thirty-three of the 41 mass killings had four or more people have been killed, excluding the perpetrator were mass shootings, with the second-most mass killings in a year prior to 2019 was 38 in 2006.

The 211 people killed in this year’s cases is still eclipsed by the 224 victims in 2017, when the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history took place in Las Vegas.

The mass shootings this year included three in August — one at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, another at Dayton, Ohio and a workplace shooting in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where 12 were killed.

While the large death tolls attracted much of the attention, the killings inflicted a mental and physical toll on dozens of others. The database does not have a complete count of victims who were wounded, but among the three mass shootings in August alone, more than 65 people were injured.

President Trump is under fire again from the left, being accused of retweeting a post that included the name of the whistle-blower whose complaint led to the president’s impeachment, sharing a post from a user named @surfermom77, who described themselves as a “100% Trump supporter”.

The retweet seemed to disappear from the president’s timeline for a period but was visible again later, as the president has repeatedly called for the whistle-blower to be identified, ignoring federal laws that guarantee the protection of whistle-blowers, designed to shield those who come forward with evidence of wrongdoing by the government.

In November, lawyers for the whistle-blower – who is said to work in the US intelligence community – issued a cease-and-desist warning to the president, saying their client was “in physical danger”. But the president ignored the warning and continued to call for them to be named.

A federal grand jury sitting in Huntington, W. Va. has returned a six-count superseding indictment charging Steven Dale McCallister, 45, and his father, Larry McCallister, 76, a retired Cabell County Deputy Sheriff, with various drug and gun crimes.
Operation Cookout that resulted in indictments against 39 individuals for their roles in a heroin and fentanyl trafficking conspiracy. This HSI-led operation resulted in 35 arrests, as well as the seizure of 24 firearms, 30 kilograms of fentanyl, 30 kilograms of heroin, five kilograms of cocaine and more than $700,000 in cash during a three-day takedown in August 2019.
