The pandemic sweeping the world will turn global economic growth sharply negative in 2020, with only a partial recovery seen in 2021, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said.
In remarks prepared for delivery ahead of next week’s IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings, she said the crisis would hit emerging markets and developing countries hardest of all, which would then need hundreds of billions of dollars in foreign aid.

The impact of the pandemic on the global economy could see as many as 600 million people — 8 per cent of the world’s population — pushed into poverty, as globalists are calling for cancellation of developing nations’ foreign debt to wealthier states, with grim projections that decades of poverty alleviation efforts could be lost.
A paper by researchers from the Australian National University (ANU) and King’s College London projects that if consumption contracts in developing countries by 20 per cent, it could see an increase in poverty for 400 to 600 million people globally.

After marching its deadly trek through New York and other cities, Covid-19 is now hitting small towns in different ways:
William Knapp, the head of a local health board in New London, Ohio, spoke about the possibility of a corona-virus outbreak in Huron County at a meeting in February.
“It started with a cough,that hacking, dry cough”, his daughter, Sheri Gavalya, said that few days later her father William Knapp, 79 came down with something, and died of the disease on 29 March, adding to the state’s grim toll: 65 dead from Covid-19, as Ms. Gavalya, a 58-year-old nurse, is now worried about her own health.
So are others in New London, a one-traffic-light town in the north-eastern part of Ohio, after the governor, Mike DeWine, being one of the first in the country to issue a stay-at-home order, one he has extended to 1 May. Most New London stores are now closed, making this sleepy town even quieter than usual. The silence, says mayor Toby Thomas, is kind of “eerie”.
In Arkansas, the toll is sobering but not as bad as it is in Ohio and other states – there have been 625 cases in Arkansas, and 10 people have died.
The hot spots of Covid-19 are New York, Detroit and other big cities, but small towns across the nation are going through their own wave of infection, and medical experts say the disease could be devastating in rural areas – many of the residents are elderly, living far from hospitals and clinics.
