Germany’s permanent vaccine commission, known by the short name Stiko, published new guidelines recommending that the AstraZeneca vaccine be issued only to people older than 60, as Bavaria’s state premier Markus Söder spoke rather frankly amid the latest confusion surrounding the serum:
“At some point with AstraZeneca specifically we might have to operate with a lot of freedom: whoever wants to and whoever dares to, so to speak, should have the opportunity,” he said.
“With AstraZeneca it seems some new problem or other should be expected daily. And honestly you sense that in the broader public perception as well.”
Söder said the decision was made “on the basis of currently available data on the occurrence of rare, but very serious thrombosis-related side-effects,” and that the commission would issue guidelines on what to do for adults under 60 who had received a first AstraZeneca shot, and were due another by the end of April.

“In light of recent cases of COVID-19 that have been linked to the ward 5D at Princess Alexandra (PA) Hospital, a decision has been made for PA hospital to go into lockdown today,” Queensland’s Metro South Hospital and Health Service confirmed in a statement that the Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital has been placed in lockdown amid “escalating” concerns over two COVID-19 clusters that have also prompted the Commonwealth’s Chief Medical Officer to declare Greater Brisbane a hotspot.
“As a precautionary measure, we are continuing to test all staff that have worked in ward 5D at PA Hospital between midday Friday, March 19 and 4:00pm Sunday, March 28.”
Ward 5D is the PA Hospital’s infectious diseases ward.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged a deeper investigation into whether the coronavirus outbreak originated with a leak from a lab, as world leaders pushed for a treaty to prepare for future pandemics, following a report by WHO and Chinese experts, judging the lab-leak hypothesis highly unlikely, saying the virus behind Covid-19 had probably jumped from bats to humans via an intermediary animal.
In a joint statement with 13 allies including Australia, Britain, Canada, Japan and South Korea, the US voiced concern over the report and said that the mission to China “was significantly delayed and lacked access to complete, original data and samples”.
“It is critical for independent experts to have full access to all pertinent human, animal and environmental data, research, and personnel involved in the early stages of the outbreak relevant to determining how this pandemic emerged,” said the statement, without explicitly criticizing China.

Devi Sridhar, professor of global public health at the University of Edinburgh explained that “the more the virus circulates, the more likely it is that mutations and variants will emerge, which could make our current vaccines ineffective”:
“At the same time, poor countries are being left behind without vaccines and basic medical supplies like oxygen,” Sridhar remarked.
“As we’ve learned, viruses don’t care about borders. We have to vaccinate as many people as possible, everywhere in the world, as quickly as possible. Why wait and watch instead of getting ahead of this?”
