A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson issued a statement that the United Kingdom (UK) imposed unilateral sanctions on relevant Chinese individuals and entity, citing the so-called human rights issues in Xinjiang:

“This move, based on nothing but lies and disinformation, flagrantly breaches international law and basic norms governing international relations, grossly interferes in China’s internal affairs, and severely undermines China-UK relations,” said the statement.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has summoned British Ambassador to China to lodge solemn representations, expressing firm opposition and strong condemnation.

The Chinese side decides to sanction the following nine individuals and four entities on the UK side that maliciously spread lies and disinformation: Tom Tugendhat, Iain Duncan Smith, Neil O’Brien, David Alton, Tim Loughton, Nusrat Ghani, Helena Kennedy, Geoffrey Nice, Joanne Nicola Smith Finley, China Research Group, Conservative Party Human Rights Commission, Uyghur Tribunal, and Essex Court Chambers.

“As of today, the individuals concerned and their immediate family members are prohibited from entering the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao of China. Their property in China will be frozen, and Chinese citizens and institutions will be prohibited from doing business with them. China reserves the right to take further measures,” said the statement.

The German Health Ministry announced that people flying into Germany will be required to undergo coronavirus testing as of midnight (2300 UTC) on Sunday, March 28, and will be required to take a COVID test before departure, regardless of the coronavirus risk level in their country of origin, hence airlines will only be allowed to let passengers on board with proof of a negative COVID test.

Travelers will have to pay for the tests themselves, PCR tests, and approved rapid tests will be accepted, with airline crews are exempt, as anyone who tests positive will be required to quarantine according to local rules at their own cost.

The testing requirements are expected to last until mid-May.

US President Joe Biden was pressed on how he would address the surge in migrants at the southern border at his first official press conference, being  challenged on whether his policies could be contributing to the increase in child arrivals, as more than 17,000 juveniles are being kept in government detention centers, but he had defended his record and vowed to be transparent. He also doubled his administration’s vaccine rollout goal, saying that he now aims to have 200 million jabs be given before his 100th day in office, but the situation at the US-Mexico border dominated the event.

During the White House news conference, Mr. Biden blamed his predecessor Donald Trump for the growing humanitarian crisis on the southern border, and said it was normal for the US to experience an influx of migrants in cooler months:

“The truth of the matter is, nothing has changed,” he said.

“The reason they’re coming is that it’s the time they can travel with the least likelihood of dying on the way because of the heat in the desert.”

“I’d like to think it’s because I’m a nice guy, but it’s not,” he said, calling the surge a cyclical event.
