German Health Minister Jens Spahn has indicated that rising infections mean it may be impossible to ease restrictions in the coming weeks, hence experts now warn that the rise in cases is “clearly exponential”, and the country may not be able to relax lockdown measures in the run-up to Easter.

Mr. Spahn made his comments as Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases warned that case numbers were rising at a “very clearly exponential rate”:

“The rising case numbers may mean that we are unable to take any further steps towards opening up in the weeks to come. On the contrary, we may even have to take steps backwards.” 

Health authorities say highly contagious variants have driven up case numbers in the EU’s biggest country, which is entering a third wave of the disease.

“We can no longer be punished for our geographical position,” Malta’s Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said, as EU foreign affairs secretary’s from Cyprus, Greece, Italy,  and Spain met in Athens to call for changes to the EU’s pact on migration and asylum, pushing for an EU-wide repatriation mechanism, saying a proposed overhaul of migration rules does not go far enough.

Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Malta and Spain took part in the talks ahead of an EU summit later this week which is expected to focus on EU-Turkey relations. The five EU members have extensive Mediterranean coastlines and are the most common targets for migrants from North Africa and the Middle East, and Turkey, which hosts more than 3.5 million Syrian refugees, agreed to take back migrants not entitled to EU protection in return for billions of euros in aid.

But migrant groups say the pact signed with Brussels in 2016 has serious flaws. The EU is planning to reform the deal.

A South Florida tax preparer was charged Tuesday by criminal information with wire fraud in connection with a scheme to obtain over 100 COVID-19-relief loans under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).
According to the allegations in the information, Leonel Rivero, 35, of Miami, owned a tax-preparation business and submitted approximately 118 fraudulent PPP loan applications on behalf of himself and his accomplices. Combined, the 118 PPP loan applications sought more than $2.3 million in PPP loans. On each PPP loan application, Rivero allegedly falsified the applicant’s prior-year income and expenses and submitted fraudulent IRS tax forms. Rivero and his accomplices allegedly received approximately $975,582 in PPP loans as a result of the fraud. (loan-fraud19)

A federal grand jury in Los Angeles returned a superseding indictment, unsealed Thursday, charging four additional individuals for their alleged participation in a scheme to submit over 150 fraudulent loan applications seeking over $21.9 million in COVID-19 relief funds guaranteed by the Small Business Administration (SBA) under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
Manuk Grigoryan, 27, of Sun Valley, California; Arman Hayrapetyan, 38, of Glendale, California; Edvard Paronyan, 40, of Granada Hills, California; and Vahe Dadyan, 41, of Glendale, were each charged in a superseding indictment filed in the Central District of California with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Grigoryan, Hayrapetyan, and Paronyan were each also charged with 11 counts of wire fraud and eight counts of bank fraud. In addition, Grigoryan and Hayrapetyan were each charged with one count of aggravated identity theft. Vahe Dadyan was charged with six counts of wire fraud, three counts of bank fraud, and one count of money laundering.

The 2021 Summer Hire Employment Program provides students in high school, college, trade school, vocational school and other qualifying educational programs with opportunities to work in federal departments and agencies and to explore federal careers while still in school, said Tracy Wise, Civilian Recruitment and Placement branch chief.

In past years and pre-COVID-19, the program, which runs from May through September, would have upwards of 2,000 available positions. This year, the Air Force’s Personnel Center received 1,318 requests from participating stateside and overseas bases.

France and Poland have reintroduced partial lockdowns as both countries battle a sharp rise in COVID19 infections in recent weeks, as some 21 million people in 16 areas of France, including the capital Paris, are affected as the country fears a third wave.
In Poland, non-essential shops, hotels, cultural and sporting facilities are now closed for three weeks, with the country has the highest new daily rates of COVID19 cases since November.
Coronavirus cases are also rising exponentially in Germany, with Chancellor Angela Merkel warning it is likely that the country will now need to apply an “emergency brake” and re-impose lockdown measures, as the country has recorded its highest number of new COVID-19 infections since January, according to data published by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases on Thursday.
There were 17,504 new cases of the virus recorded over the past 24 hours, up from 13,343 recorded on Wednesday. The rate of infection reached 90 new cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A shooting in a nightclub in the US city of Dallas on Saturday left one person dead and five others injured, according to police reports, with the incident occurring at about 1:30 a.m. (6:30 GMT) as a result of a skirmish between two groups of people in the club.
One of the victims, a woman, succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. The five others remain in medical care in conditions varying from stable to critical, the police said.
