An mysterious radio signal was registered recently, emitted from the direction of our nearest galactic neighbor Proxima Centauri, a red dwarf star that is only 4.2 light-years from the Sun, an event that sparked speculation that it could finally be a long-anticipated “calling card” from another civilization, i.e. the much sought-after evidence of life in space.

The signal, picked up in late October 2020 by the Breakthrough Listen project, and labeled BLC-1, for Breakthrough Listen Candidate-1, was unlike anything the project has previously encountered, since the software filters and cuts off the random stream of signals originating from Earth or Earth-orbiting satellites to isolate those hailing from deep space.

This transmission had “particular properties that caused it to pass many of our checks, and we cannot yet explain it”, team leader was quoted as saying by Scientific American.

Earlier, in April and May 2019, the 64-metre Parkes radio telescope in Australia picked up a faint signal.

The hope for an end to the COVID-19 pandemic is on the horizon with several vaccines on the way to an arm near you, with the Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday laying out how the fleet will be vaccinated at a Senate hearing in December, as sailors and civilians working in health care will go first, followed by those sailors manning the ballistic missile subs or engaged in the cyber mission, while units getting ready to deploy will be next up in the coming months.

Adm. Gilday expressed confidence that the U.S. Navy and military in general will be able to roll out the vaccine pretty quickly.

A team of internationally recognized scientists at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences are testing melatonin as a treatment for patients with mild and moderate COVID-19, with 30 patients to be enrolled in pilot study, as the Institutional Review Board at UB has granted approval to the researchers — who have complementary expertise in the brain hormone melatonin, lung disease and infectious diseases — to use melatonin to treat COVID-19 patients under an Investigational New Drug approval provisionally granted by the Food and Drug Administration.

Sanjay Sethi, MD, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, is clinical co-principal investigator on the trial:

“Current proven treatments for COVID-19 are for patients severe enough to be hospitalized,” says Sethi, who is director of UB’s Clinical Research Office and deputy director of UB’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

“It would be a major advance to have a treatment that is effective in milder disease. The infrastructure and collaborations fostered by the CTSI over the past few years at UB are why the team that is putting this trial in motion was able to come together so rapidly.”

During the Spain brutal civil war between 1936 and 1939, when General Francisco Franco, the leader of the Nationalists, received support from Nazi Germany and fascist Italy during the conflict, and later on, the Spanish Blue Division ‘volunteer’ unit was sent to the Eastern Front, but now, half a century later Guardia Civil national police force has uncovered a massive collection of Nazi artefacts during an operation to detain a criminal gang involved in the trafficking of illegal firearms and drugs.

In a video posted on its official YouTube page, the Guardia Civil showed footage of officers rifling through bags containing guns, ammunition and passports in a room filled with Nazi German-era artefacts, ranging from Stahlhelm helmets and officers’ caps, to portraits and sculptures of Nazi officials, flags, banners and uniforms, as well as WWII-era vintage weapons and ammunition including the MP 40 submachine gun.

Three gang members – two German nationals and a Brit, were said to have been detained during the operation.
