Police stormed in on anti-government protesters at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, with video from the confrontation showed officers racing past explosions at the campus entrance, as anti-government protesters blocked a key arterial tunnel for most of the past week.
ABC China correspondent reported Hong Kong Polytechnic University, “All hell is breaking loose”:
“The police Raptors — the special tactical forces — I saw them race past the no-man’s land through the protest line, and they’re firing a tremendous amount of tear gas,” he told ABC Radio National
“Police earlier in the night said they may resort to live rounds if protesters continued to throw fire bombs at them, and so this is what everybody is really concerned about.”
Hong Kong police fought protesters who had barricaded themselves at a university campus in the centre of the city and were hurling petrol bombs and debris at officers.

While Hong Kong has been rocked by months of violent protests triggered by a proposed law allowing for the extradition of criminal suspects to mainland China, which was subsequently withdrawn, German Chancellor Angela Merkel with Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang were inspecting a German military honor guard in Berlin, an action that infuriated human rights watchdog Amnesty International that called for Germany to cease its practice of training Chinese soldiers.
“In light of the human rights situation in China and the general role of the military there, there is no justifiable reason for Germany to help train the Chinese military,” Amnesty said.
“The German government should send a clear sign and immediately cease any military cooperation.”
