The Justice Department announced that the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) and the Office of Justice Programs’ Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) have awarded more than $61 million in grant funding to support the Attorney General’s Operation Relentless Pursuit (ORP) initiative.
Launched on Dec. 18, 2019, ORP aims to intensify federal law enforcement resources into seven American cities with violent crime levels several times the national average – Albuquerque, Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, Kansas City, Memphis, and Milwaukee.
“While violent crime is down across the country as a whole, some communities remain caught in the grips of violent actors,” said Attorney General William P. Barr. “That’s why I launched Operation Relentless Pursuit last December – an initiative to combat violent crime in seven cities where it remains stubbornly high. Today’s grant awards are critical to our mission. We cannot succeed in eradicating crime without resources – the most vital of which are the brave men and women who serve and protect our communities each day. These funds will boost the forces that need them most.”
“Successful strategies to target and reduce violent crime are extremely resource intensive,” said COPS Office Director Phil Keith. “There is no greater resource than additional men and women on the front lines of the relentless fight against gangs, drug traffickers and those that mean harm to our nation’s communities. The funding announced today is greatly needed for the Operation Relentless Pursuit jurisdictions and the COPS Office is honored to dedicate resources for this effort.”

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov has tested positive for coronavirus and is receiving treatment at hospital, following a worrisome announcement of a new surge in coronavirus cases which puts Russia at the second-highest number of infections in the world after the United States, now having 232,243 recorded cases, and 2,116 deaths.
“Yes, I am sick. I am receiving treatment,” Mr. Peskov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency, being the latest high-profile Government official to fall ill with COVID-19, after Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin told Mr. Putin at the end of April he had been diagnosed with the virus and was temporarily stepping down to recover.
Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova tested positive earlier this month, her spokeswoman said, and Construction Minister Vladimir Yakushev and one of his deputies were earlier diagnosed with the virus.
Mr. Peskov said he had last met President Putin in person over a month ago, according to news sources.

The US’s top infectious diseases doctor has warned senators the virus will spread if the country opens up too soon, as Dr. Anthony Fauci said if federal guidelines to reopen are not followed, “little spikes” will become outbreaks, and also saying that the real US death toll is probably higher than the official figure of 80,000, a statement that is placing him at odds with the upbeat tone of President Trump who is apprehensive to get the economy going again.
Dr. Fauci was speaking via video to a Republican-led committee of the US Senate, while referring to the White House’s Opening Up America Again plan, which includes three 14-day phases that states should consider implementing as they allow schools and businesses to reopen, as several US states already restarting their economies have infection rates that are rising, not falling.
He warned of the risk of triggering an outbreak that officials would not be able to control, adding such an outbreak would set back economic recovery and could lead to “suffering and death”.
