A Romanian national was sentenced today in federal court in Springfield, Massachusetts, in connection with a multi-state ATM card skimming scheme.
Bogdan Viorel Rusu, 38, a Romanian national formerly residing in Queens, New York, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni for the District of Massachusetts to 65 months in prison followed by 60 months of supervised release. Judge Mastroianni also ordered Rusu to pay restitution in the amount of $440,130 and forfeit the same amount. In September 2018, Rusu pleaded guilty to an Information that charged him with one count each of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud and aggravated identity theft. Rusu was arrested on Nov. 14, 2016, and initially charged by complaint in the District of New Jersey and has been in custody since.

Russia is requiring dating app Tinder to turn over data on its users — including messages — to the national intelligence agencies, part of the country’s widening crackdown on internet freedoms, and the dating app will have to cooperate with Russian authorities or be blocked, after Putin’s government passed new legislation in recent years tightening control over online activity.
The communications regulator said that Tinder was included on a list of online services operating in Russia that are required to provide user data on demand to Russian authorities, including the FSB security agency.
The rule would apply to any user’s data that goes through Russian servers, including messages to other people on the app, and companies are required to store six months’ worth of user data ready to hand to the authorities, but social network LinkedIn refused to comply with requirements that personal data on Russian citizens be stored on servers within Russia.
