Virginia Beach police have vowed to never again speak the name of engineer DeWayne Craddock, an African-American ‘disgruntlled” emploee, who killed 12 people and injured four more after opening fire on a Virginia Beach local government centre, with many of his victims also African-Americans.
Is this tragegy a case of sudden anger or madness, a statement of hatred against the government that terminated him, or something even more bizarre? The crime definitely does not match the usual mass murderers “reasons to kill”, like hatred agains a particular religious or racial minority, lifestyle, profound personal failure, or “group think”.
Could it be that he was secretly infatuated with a jihadist or other violent school of thought?
The 12 victims were remembered at a prayer vigil in the city, three others are in hospital with serious injuries, with one victim requiring multiple surgeries, and the police did not comment on a motive, but said Craddock bought his guns legally.
When they disclosed his name, police projected photos on a screen and gave each victim’s name along with biographical details.
