Russian attempts to launch cyber-attacks against US conservative groups have been thwarted, when its security staff had won control of six exclusive domains mimicking their websites.

The software company said Russian hackers had tried to steal data from political organizations, including the International Republican Institute and the Hudson Institute think tanks.

“We’re concerned that these and other attempts pose security threats to a broadening array of groups connected with both American political parties in the run-up to the 2018 elections,” Microsoft said in its blog detailing its work.

Iran unveiled the country’s first domestically designed and built Kowsar fighter on Tuesday ahead of the National Day of Defense Industry, Tasnim News Agency reported.

According to Tasnim News Agency, the fighter conducted the first demonstration flight during a special ceremony attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

The jet is capable of carrying various weapons and could be used for aerial support missions, the news agency added.

33 individuals were charged Thursday following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) into a scheme to illegally bring into the United States millions of dollars of Chinese-manufactured goods by smuggling them through ports of entry on the East and West Coasts. One defendant is also charged with unlawful procurement of naturalization.

The charges include conspiracy to traffic, and trafficking, in counterfeit goods; conspiracy to smuggle, and smuggling, fake products into the United States; money laundering conspiracy; immigration fraud and unlawful procurement of naturalization.

Also, the government restrained nine real properties in Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn, New York belonging to the defendants.

“This investigation exposed the global nature of intellectual property crimes, allegedly being executed by those arrested today. Counterfeit goods manufactured and smuggled from China with a suggested value close to half a billion dollars, were intended to make its way into U.S. markets and the hands of unsuspecting consumers,” said HSI Special Agent-in-Charge Melendez.

“This investigation should be a crystal clear message that counterfeiting and intellectual property rights violations are anything but a victimless crime as it harms legitimate businesses, consumers, and governments.”

According to the court filings, the defendants played various roles in the trafficking of counterfeit goods manufactured in China, brought by ocean-going ships to the United States in 40-foot shipping containers, smuggled through ports of entry disguised as legitimate imports and distributed throughout the country. The counterfeit goods included items such as fake Louis Vuitton and Tory Burch handbags, Michael Kors wallets, Hermes belts and Chanel perfume.

Marlon Hicks, 31, of Crown Point, Indiana, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for distributing information regarding the manufacture and use of explosives, with the intent that the information is used for and in furtherance of a crime of violence.

“The Department of Justice is committed to investigating and prosecuting terrorist threats against our homeland,” said Assistant Attorney General Demers.

“The defendant plotted to conduct an attack on U.S. soil and, with today’s sentence, he is being held accountable for his actions. I applaud the efforts of the agents and prosecutors to achieve this successful outcome. Their work will ensure that the actions of the defendant, inspired by an evil, will serve only as a cautionary tale for other would-be terrorists.”

According to the documents, in this case, Hicks rapidly transformed from a vocal online supporter of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization, to someone planning a terrorist act.

President Trump has accused China of manipulating its currency to combat US tariffs, an accusation resembling claims Mr. Trump made during his 2016 campaign as the two countries prepare to meet in Washington to discuss the ongoing trade fight. In July, the two countries imposed the first round of tit-for-tat tariffs, on trade worth $34bn, with plans on the drawing board to impose import duties on a further $16bn .

The administration is also preparing additional tariffs on $200bn worth of Chinese goods, which are the subject of hearings in Washington this week.

“I think China’s manipulating their currency, absolutely,” Mr. Trump told Reuters.

Mr. Trump has criticized the higher cost of borrowing, fearing that will slow the economy.

In the third bi-partisan letter of its kind, more than 175 former US intelligence leaders have backed ex-CIA chief John Brennan since the president revoked his security clearance.

The White House has defended Mr. Trump’s decision to revoke security clearances.

“All of us believe it is critical to protecting classified information from unauthorized disclosure. But we believe equally strongly that former government officials have the right to express their unclassified views on what they see as critical national security issues without fear of being punished for doing so.”

Mr. Trump was unmoved by the letter, telling reporters that he “never respected” Mr. Brennan, has “had a tremendous response” for revoking his security clearance, and hopes Brenan would file a lawsuit.

The central banks of Qatar and Turkey signed a currency swap agreement in the capital Doha after $15 billion was pledged as an initial investment package.

The agreement aims to enhance bilateral cooperation between two banks by setting a two-way currency exchange line and will provide liquidity and support for financial stability, along with facilitating the exchange of trade between Turkey and Qatar.

Two suspects involved in the early morning gun attack on the U.S. Embassy in capital Ankara were arrested, soon after they fired on the compound.

The suspects are being interrogated at a police station in Ankara after six shots were fired from a white vehicle at the U.S. Embassy’s main entrance. Turkey’s presidential aide condemned the attack on U.S. Embassy:

“We condemn the attack on the U.S. embassy. This is an apparent attempt to create chaos. Turkey is a safe country, and all foreign missions remain safe under the law. The incident is being investigated and will be clarified as soon as possible.”

In a written statement, the Ankara Governor had said there were no casualties in the incident.

But over the weekend, footage of the children walking down a street during the celebrations wearing niqabs and carrying what appeared to be cardboard cut-outs of AK47 rifles went viral across the country.
