Mabna Institute hackers who penetrated systems belonging to private and public US institutions in order to steal research, academic, and proprietary data, and intellectual property were charged for a coordinated campaign of cyber intrusions into computer systems belonging to 144 U.S. universities, 176 universities across 21 foreign countries, 47 domestic and foreign private sector companies.

The defendants were listed as follows: Gholamreza Rafatnejad, 38; Ehsan Mohammadi, 37; Abdollah Karima, aka Vahid Karima, 39; Mostafa Sadeghi, 28; Seyed Ali Mirkarimi, 34; Mohammed Reza Sabahi, 26; Roozbeh Sabahi, 24; Abuzar Gohari Moqadam, 37; and Sajjad Tahmasebi, 30, all citizens and residents of Iran, who were each leaders, contractors, associates, hackers-for-hire or affiliates of the Mabna Institute, that stole more than 31 terabytes of academic data and intellectual property from universities, and email accounts of employees at private sector companies, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.

A very active cyclone season is growling up around the Australian tropics, with four significant systems loitering around the country’s north, including severe Tropical Cyclone Marcus, Tropical Cyclone Nora off Australia’s north-west and two tropical lows to the north east.

Tropical Cyclone Marcus with recorded maximum average wind speeds near its centre of 142 mi/h and wind gusts of up to 200mi/h battered Darwin as a category two system over the weekend, developed into a category five system this week to become the strongest in Australian waters for more than a decade.
Wind speeds above this intensity have not been witnessed in Australian waters since Severe Tropical Cyclone Monica in 2006.

China announced that it is considering higher tariffs for imported U.S. products worth about $3 billion dollars to balance losses caused by tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from China on March 23, 2018, after President Donald Trump signed a memorandum that could impose tariffs on up to 60 billion U.S. dollars of Chinese products, fueling fears that the world’s two largest economies could be sliding towards a trade war.

Washington is pressing China to reduce its 375-billion-dollar trade surplus with the United States by 100 billion dollars, and will fight targeting of 128 U.S. products, including pork, wine, and seamless steel tubes.

ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), working jointly U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Caribbean Air and Marine Branch (CAMB) and the Puerto Rico Police Department (PRPD) seized  1,441 kilograms of cocaine in Vega Alta, a stash with an estimated street value of approximately $29 million.

On March 19, HSI Arecibo and CBP air units detected a 32-foot Century vessel north of Puerto Rico transporting what appeared to be bales of narcotics. HSI agents, with the assistance of PRPD’s air unit, responded to the area and witnessed when the vessel crew jumped out of the vessel and ran toward a wooded area followed by those part of the offloading crew. HSI special agents secured and seized the vessel and the 1,289 bricks of cocaine weighing 1,441 kilograms. A Dominican Republic national was arrested in conjunction with the seizure.

Erick Jamal Hendricks, 37, of Charlotte, North Carolina, was convicted today by a jury in Akron, Ohio, of attempting and conspiring to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization.

“Erick Jamal Hendricks represents the significant online ISIS threat that we face daily – a US citizen that becomes radicalized online and attempts to recruit and train individuals to commit jihad, all while on American soil,” said Special Agent in Charge Anthony. “The FBI urges the public to report information regarding individuals pledging their allegiance to ISIS or other identified terrorist groups. The FBI is pleased that Hendricks was stopped before he was successful and now will spend a significant amount of time behind bars.”

According to court documents and trial testimony, Hendricks tried to recruit people to train together and conduct terrorist attacks in the United States on behalf of ISIS, including Amir Al-Ghazi who was arrested after attempting to purchase an AK-47 assault rifle and ammunition, and “brothers” Elton Simpson and Nadir Hamid Soofi who became part of an organized terrorist attack.

Two men and a woman from Texas are in custody Wednesday after authorities seized a package of fentanyl destined for Ohio.

“Fentanyl is a dangerous synthetic opioid with deadly consequences for users and those in law enforcement,” said HSI Detroit Special Agent in Charge Steve Francis. “This significant seizure clearly demonstrates HSI’s resolve to combatting the ongoing epidemic affecting Ohio, which we redoubled last week by pledging increased resources in the state.”

The seizure comes days after ICE and Ohio officials announced that HSI special agents had trained more than 300 law enforcement personnel in the state on “Darknet” and virtual currency, which is increasingly how synthetic opioids are purchased.

“The fentanyl seized last night is enough to kill everyone in Toledo several times over,” said U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio Justin Herdman. “This is a great example of law enforcement working together to make our community safer.”

Amor M. Ftouhi, 50, of Montreal, Canada, who was previously indicted in July 2017, for charges relating to an attack on a Bishop Airport officer in Flint, Michigan, was charged today with an additional offense of committing an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries.

According to court records, Mr. Ftouhi entered the United States from Canada for the purpose of killing government personnel in the United States. Before entering the United States on June 16, 2017, while in Canada, Mr. Ftouhi conducted online research of American gun laws and for gun shows in Michigan. Mr. Ftouhi subsequently traveled to Michigan where he was unsuccessful in purchasing a gun and purchased a knife instead. On June 20, 2017, Mr. Ftouhi walked up to the victim, who is a lieutenant with the Bishop Airport Authority and was in full uniform, and stabbed the police officer in the neck with a knife. Mr. Ftouhi referenced killings in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and yelled “Allahu Akbar.” After his arrest, Mr. Ftouhi told law enforcement that he was a “soldier of Allah” and subscribed to the ideology of al-Qaeda and Usama bin Laden.
