“One shot in the head died at the spot. Another one died later with a bullet wound to the chest,” as a police raid on a shipyard in Myanmar’s second-largest city turned violent when authorities fired live rounds at protesters gathering to stop arrests, killing two people and injuring several more, emergency workers said.

“Twenty people were injured and two are dead,” said Ko Aung, a leader of the Parahita Darhi volunteer emergency service agency in Mandalay, with some protesters fired catapults at police who responded with tear gas and gun fire, with medics and reporters saying both live ammunition and rubber bullets were being used, as much of the country has been in uproar since the military deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a coup on February 1, with hundreds of thousands of demonstrators taking to the streets to protest against the junta.

A Moscow appeal court upheld a prison sentence imposed on Alexei Navalny after he returned to Russia from Germany following a poisoning attack, shortening his nearly three-year jail term by just six weeks, as presiding Judge Dmitry rejected Navalny’s appeal of the February 2 ruling, which had turned a 2014 suspended sentence on embezzlement charges into real jail time, the court deciding to count the six weeks Navalny was under house arrest as part of the time served, meaning he will now be imprisoned for just over two-and-a-half years in a penal colony.

A Moscow court on Saturday also convicted Navalny for defamation. Judge Vera Akimova said Navalny was guilty of defaming a World War II veteran who was among a group of Russians Navalny called “traitors” for appearing in a pro-Kremlin video.

Supporters of the outspoken opposition figure say the rulings and several other cases against the 44-year-old are a pretext to silence his corruption exposes and quash his political ambitions.

“Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster,” the statement said.

Mr. Biden has been in touch with the mayors of some of Texas’ biggest cities, such as Houston, Austin and Dallas, to ensure they have access to government resources, an administration official said.

Coronavirus cases are rising rapidly in the German border town of Flensburg, with half linked to the British mutation, raising concern that tighter restrictions are imminent, and it is spreading through town at high speed.

(Kanto Kosan) were indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with an alleged long-running scheme to defraud the U.S. Navy and pollute Japanese waters by dumping contaminated water removed from U.S. Navy ships into the ocean, as Sojiro Imahashi, the president and CEO of Kanto Kosan, Tsuyoshi Ifuku, and Yuki Yamamiya, were charged with one count of conspiracy to make false claims, to commit ocean dumping, and to commit major fraud against the U.S.; four counts of major fraud against the U.S.; and six counts of submitting false claims:

“The defendants deceived the U.S. Navy by willfully failing to satisfy the company’s obligations under $120 million in contracts with the Department of Defense that were designed, among other things, to ensure the company not only delivered the required services to the Navy, but also complied with critical environmental safeguards,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Nicholas L. McQuaid for the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.

“The Criminal Division will continue its efforts to protect the integrity of military contracting and safeguard taxpayer dollars.”
