President Trump escalated his trade war with China, raising retaliatory tariffs and ordering American companies to consider alternatives to doing business with, in a eye for eye trade battle between the two countries, with China announcing new tariffs on $US75 billion of US products, deepening a conflict over trade and technology that threatens to tip a weakening global economy into recession. 

Mr. Trump responded by an additional 5 per cent duty on $US550 billion ($814 billion) in targeted Chinese goods, with the US planning to impose 10 per cent tariffs on Chinese goods commencing on the same dates.

There are about 40 closed cities in Russia, first established during the war years of 1940s,  officially known by the acronym ZATO in Russian, mostly often associated with either military installations or major research centers and are used to house employees and their families.

The city of Sarov, where the five scientists killed in the explosion were buried, is the site of a nuclear weapons design facility, it’s been a closed city since 1946, when it was renamed Arzamas-16 and its location was removed from all unclassified maps.

It hold the secrets to global nuclear disasters, and the lack of information from the Russian Government following the deadly explosion on August 8 is raising the question if the actual accident might have been worse than originally reported.

Both the city near the accident site, Severodvinsk, and the one where the victims were buried, Sarov, are “closed cities” — highly controlled areas that house the country’s most important weapons sites , where the Government does not want outsiders knowing what goes on there, especially when accidents happen.

The movement of people and information in and out of these cities is highly restricted, and residents are often not allowed to disclose where they live to outsiders.

President Trump reacted angrily after the head of the US central bank spoke about the economic risks of a trade war with China, with the president asking if the Federal Reserve chairman Jerome “Janet Yellen Ir.” Powell was a greater “enemy” than China’s leader Xi Jinping.

Mr. Powell ignited the furor after saying trade tensions were hitting the global economy and the Fed didn’t have a “rulebook” to deal with the fallout, the US economy was in a “favourable place”, he listed a series of economic and geopolitical risks linked to Mr Trump’s trade war with China.

There are “no recent precedents to guide any policy response to the current situation,” Mr. Powell said, adding that monetary policy “cannot provide a settled rulebook for international trade”, since he has been under pressure from Mr. Trump for a deep cut in interest rates, and has faced a series of derogatory Twitter posts from the president

 “As usual, the Fed did NOTHING! It is incredible that they can ‘speak’ without knowing or asking what I am doing, which will be announced shortly,” Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter
